Blanes offers different perspectives on the Costa Brava: coastal panoramas and botanical collections sit alongside traces of Roman history and buildings from later centuries. A circular route to the hermitages and a fireworks festival in July also shape the character of the place. Which of these themes you want to define your stay is a good starting point for planning your trip.

Botanical Gardens and Coastal Landscape

JardĂ BotĂ nic Marimurtra is located on sea cliffs and offers coastal panoramas. Predominantly exotic plant species define the garden, which is considered one of the most beautiful gardens in the Mediterranean. By contrast, JardĂn tropical Pinya de Rosa offers a distinctive botanical highlight: its cactus collection includes more than 7,000 species from around the world and is considered one of the most interesting and species-rich collections in Europe.

Jardín tropical Pinya de Rosa lies within the Paraje Natural de Interés Nacional de Pinya de la Rosa. Cala Treumal is also surrounded by the Pinya de Rosa landscape, designated a Paratge Natural d’Interès Nacional. The beach is the northernmost in the municipality of Blanes. As you explore the natural attractions, a diverse plant collection and a distinct coastal landscape come together.

From Blandae to Blanes’ Buildings

The Blandae Ciutat Romana Interpretation Centre presents the ancient civitas Blandae through archaeological excavations. Blandae was a city founded by the Romans in Catalonia; its history spans from its founding in the 1st century BC to its development into medieval Blanes. This historical arc provides a distinct framework for exploring the town’s Roman roots.

Other buildings reflect different eras. Castell de Sant Joan was built in the 13th century. Its privileged location made it a first-rate viewpoint. Font Gòtica is an octagonal fountain dating from the 15th century. Six gargoyles depict human figures; at its centre is a medallion bearing the coat of arms of the Cabrera family. El Convent was built in 1583. A description dated 23 March 2018 called Casa Saladrigas a well-restored building and a municipal exhibition space. Together, these details let you explore history not only through dates, but also through architectural forms, ornamentation and the present-day use of a building.

Walking Route, Fireworks Festival and Cuisine

The Ruta de las ermitas is a walking route that links the hermitages of Blanes and explores their stories, legends and distinctive features. It offers a separate way to discover local traditions.

In July, the Concurso Internacional de Fuegos Artificiales de la Costa Brava takes place on the beaches of Blanes. The fireworks festival showcases light, colour and smoke and represents a century-old pyrotechnic tradition. If the event is important to your travel dates, check the specific programme for that year before your trip.

Suquet de Peix is also part of Blanes’ cuisine. Fishermen made this fish stew with a picada and the fish caught that day. The combination of stew, seasoning base and daily catch describes the culinary tradition without assuming any particular restaurant or current menu offering.
