Much of the municipality of Montagut i Oix lies in the heart of the protected natural landscape of Alta Garrotxa. Its trails and buildings offer different points of interest: landscapes, the area’s former connection to a castle, and the village’s Romanesque heritage are among the things you can discover in Montagut.
Landscape and Trails
The Volta circular al Cós loop trail offers views of the Montagut plain. The present-day Mare de Déu del Cós sanctuary is a viewpoint overlooking the mountains of Alta Garrotxa and the river plain. The distinction is clear when choosing a landscape focus: the loop trail showcases the Montagut plain, while the sanctuary takes in the mountains and river plain.
The CamĂ de Montagut passes through wheat fields, offers beautiful views and has Alta Garrotxa as its backdrop. It crosses the village to the G49 Montagut signpost, passes the municipal swimming pool and continues to the cycle path towards the La Cometa housing development. The Ruta la Devesa i les baumes de Caxurma also passes the municipal swimming pool and soon reaches a cycle path. Both routes pass the municipal swimming pool. The CamĂ continues to the cycle path towards the La Cometa housing development; the Ruta reaches a cycle path shortly afterwards.
Baumes de Caxurma: Natural Area with No Entry
The Baumes de Caxurma are a group of caves in sedimentary materials; the largest extends for about 400 metres. This approximate length refers to the largest cave, not a hiking route. The entry rule is essential for planning your visit: entry to the Baumes de Caxurma is prohibited because of the particularly sensitive habitat. Check local conditions before your trip.
Cultural Heritage in the Village Landscape
The Mare de Déu del Cós was the former chapel of Montagut Castle; the present-day sanctuary is also a viewpoint overlooking the mountains of Alta Garrotxa and the river plain. The remains of Castell de Montagut include the base of a medieval tower and more recent walls. In this way, the chapel’s former purpose is linked with its present-day role as a viewpoint, while the castle remains reflect different periods of construction. The more recent walls add another layer of building history to the medieval tower base.
Sant Pere de Montagut offers a different perspective on cultural heritage. The church is of Romanesque origin, integrated into the fabric of the village, and connects cultural heritage with everyday life. Its bell-gable is visible from several points in the village. Its Romanesque origins and connection with everyday life distinguish Sant Pere from the castle history at CĂłs; the visible bell-gable also anchors the church in the village landscape.
