Medieval fortifications, the Muga and a variety of trails define Sant Llorenç De La Muga. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between exploring the town’s history, excursions to viewpoints and activities by the river: each option has its own focus.

Defensive walls and Torre de Guaita

The town’s medieval walled complex is well preserved. Its fortifications include three entrance gates and several towers with circular or square floor plans. These features offer specific architectural details to look out for: in addition to the gates, the towers differ in their floor plans.

The Torre de Guaita is a historic landmark in its own right. Built in the 13th century, it has a completely circular floor plan. The tower offers a viewpoint over the Muga Valley and the town. It thus combines an architectural feature with a view of the landscape, while the gates and towers of the walled complex reveal the town’s medieval character.

River landscape and distinctive nature

The Muga runs through the municipal area for eleven kilometres. There are several gorgs along the river in Sant Llorenç De La Muga where you can go swimming. This is a seasonal option; if you want to combine your visit with a swim, plan this activity according to the time of year.

The area’s natural landscape also includes the red, acidic conglomerate cliffs of Penya-segats de la Muga. The landscape is characterised by distinctive plant life, including ferns, mosses and fungi. The Penya-segats de la Muga protected area is also the only known site in Catalonia for several valuable species of cryptogamic flora, including ferns and mosses. This botanical distinctiveness is therefore an aspect of the landscape in its own right, not merely an addition to an excursion by the water.

Trails with different destinations

The marked Camino Natural de la Muga runs from Sant Llorenç De La Muga to Castelló d’Empúries. Hiking, cycling and fishing are possible along the route; it can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. For a cycling trip, the Camí Natural de la Muga en BTT is also described: it is 42 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 498 metres and is of moderate difficulty. Markings and trail conditions can change; check them before setting out on a specific trip.

The Route Pujada a la ermita de Sant Jordi has a different purpose. It leads from the town to the Sant Jordi chapel. Its viewpoint offers views of the end of the reservoir and across the Empordà plain to the sea. For a shorter, clearly defined option, there is the Passeig de Sant Antoni: the approximately 800-metre section from the Sant Antoni hermitage to the Sínia is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Check access conditions locally. These routes differ in their destinations and details: from the connection to Castelló d’Empúries to the viewpoint at Sant Jordi and the section specifically described as suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Church, local produce and events

Santa Maria del Palau is located in the Palau area of the municipality. The church has a rectangular, single-nave layout; its continuous pointed barrel vault ends in a semicircular apse. Mongetes de Sant Llorenç are also part of local tradition: they are grown in small gardens outside the town walls. Together, these add architecture and a local product to the impressions of the fortifications and riverside landscape.

The Fira del Carbó celebrates the traditional craft of charcoal making and takes place annually on the first Sunday in March. In July, “Muga Amunt” features free, intimate concerts on the open-air stage at Font Pudosa. The stage is located beside the Muga and the medieval walled complex. If you want to plan your travel dates around either event, check the dates and programme; programming may vary.
