El Far d'Empordà brings together specific themes relating to nature and culture: walks along roads and paths, viewpoints offering different vistas, and Romanesque and medieval architectural history. When planning your stay, it is worth asking a simple question to decide what to focus on: should the day centre on exercise, the landscape or the history of the town? Each theme offers a different starting point, without requiring a set itinerary.

Walks and Nature

The Passeig naturalista pel Codollar del Riu Manol is a local nature walk. One walk leads from el Far to Estany de Fonolledes. In the town, there are walks of five to eight kilometres along roads and paths, suitable for all audiences. This distance range gives you a specific measure to help plan the length of your walks.

The quiet roads in el Far are suitable for walking and cycling. When planning your day, you can decide whether to focus on getting around on foot or by bike.

The Estany Bernat wetland fills with migratory birds at certain times. If you would like to focus on this aspect of nature, the seasonal presence of birds may play a role in choosing when to travel.

Viewpoints with Different Perspectives

From the Mirador de l'església, you can see across much of the Empordà plain. From the Mirador de la Xarxa, the horizon stretches from Cap de Creus to Coll de Banyuls, across Pení and the Serra de Rodes. The Mirador de la Barana offers a different contrast: the urban landscape of Figueres set against the rural landscape of the Empordà plain. La Muralla serves as a viewpoint over the landscape around el Far d'Empordà.

You can choose between different kinds of views: the wide plain, named points on the horizon, the contrast between town and countryside, or the landscape around the town. Each viewpoint offers a different focus, without requiring you to follow a particular route.

Architectural History and Event Dates

The Església de Sant Martí del Far is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. Gargoyles are located at its upper exterior corners. The church thus combines a specific historical period with a distinctive architectural detail.

Can Dalmau adds to the picture of the town centre: the medieval farmhouse stands next to the castle wall. The Rec d'Àlguema offers another historical perspective. This watercourse powered grain mills, some of which remained in operation until the end of the 19th century. These offer different historical reference points: the church dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, while some mills continued operating until the end of the 19th century.

The Festa Major and the Festa d'Estiu also offer different dates in the calendar. The Festa Major takes place on 11 November for Sant Martí, while the Festa d'Estiu is held in mid-July. If you are planning your trip around one of the festivals, check the event dates in advance; programmes may vary.
