In the center of Beuda’s small village, you’ll find the parish church of Sant Feliu. The municipality’s heritage ranges from other churches and a Romanesque monastery to two castle destinations with different names; there are also hikes with different planning considerations. When choosing where to stay, you can start by asking whether architectural history, a hike or a festival date should be the focus.
Churches, Monastery and Medieval Sites
The church of Santa Maria de Segueró dates from the 12th century. Inside is a polychrome alabaster depiction of the Virgin and Child from the 14th century. The building and artwork therefore belong to two different centuries: if you’re interested in the church’s history, you can distinguish its earlier construction date from the later date of the depiction.
In the wooded area of Palera is Sant Sepulcre de Palera, an 11th-century Romanesque monastery. The Bishop of Girona, Berenguer Guifré, consecrated it in 1085. The Priory of Palera enjoyed the same privileges as visitors to the Holy Land, making it a heavily frequented place of worship and pilgrimage. This significance is part of the site’s history. A path branching off to the right between Besalú and Beuda leads to the monastery.
The castle destinations can also be distinguished by their names and features. The round tower of El Castellot de Beuda is one of the oldest surviving towers in Garrotxa; the El Castellot de Beuda route leads to a medieval castle on a hill above Beuda. The El Castell de Falgars route, by contrast, leads to the remains of Castellot de Falgars on Puig del Far, a hill more than 900 meters high. Here, the similar name Castellot refers to two different destinations.
Hiking by Duration and Route
Every year, the municipality of Beuda organizes the Ruta de la Feixina as part of the Festa de Sant SebastiĂ . It is considered a popular hike of moderate difficulty and usually takes four to five hours. This gives you an idea of how much time to allow for the route when planning your day; the duration is a typical estimate.
The GR2 long-distance trail offers a different perspective: it crosses the municipality diagonally from southwest to northeast and passes through the hamlets of Palera, Beuda and Segueró. Unlike the Ruta de la Feixina, whose typical duration is specified, the focus here is on the trail’s route through the municipality. This helps you choose between a hike with a typical duration estimate and a long-distance trail that passes through several named hamlets.
Landscape and Festival Dates
Beuda’s natural area consists of mixed forests of holm oaks, oaks and pines. The municipality’s landscape is also shaped by the Pyrenees’ largest gypsum outcrop. The forest types and geological feature give the landscape its own character alongside the churches and historic buildings.
Festival dates can also shape your travel plans. The Castanyada de Beuda takes place in late October in the village of Beuda. The Festa de Sant Pere de Lligordà takes place in late June, the Festa de Sant Feliu de Beuda on the first weekend in August, and the Festa de Santa Maria de Segueró on August 14 and 15. If you’d like to plan your stay around a festival, check the dates for your travel year.
Getting There and Finding Accommodation
The GIV-5234 provides direct access from Besalú to the hamlets of Lligordà and Palera, as well as to the center of Beuda. As road conditions can change, it’s a good idea to check them before setting out.
When looking for a hotel in Beuda, you can first decide what matters most to you: the churches and monastery, the hiking trails or a festival date. For a specific offer, check the location and current availability before booking.
