A rectangular defensive tower, a viewpoint at 123 metres and a coastline dotted with old fishermenâs huts give Mont-Ras several distinct sides. There are also municipal walking trails with stated durations, as well as gastronomic events held throughout the year. When planning your stay, it is worth considering the time required, the scenery and the historical sites as separate highlights.
Church, defensive tower and mining history
The present-day parish church of Sant Esteve was built over an older church in 1599. Its construction history therefore also includes its predecessor. Torre Simona represents a different type of building: the rectangular defensive tower is made of carefully hewn granite blocks and dates to the 14th and 15th centuries. Its shape, material and historical period make it a distinct historical subject alongside the church.
Mina Pepito adds the history of mining. Route 9 leads to the mine, where you can discover the history of mining and extraction methods from the early 20th century. The route thus links a specific site with insights into the early history of mining. It is marked with signposts and PR and SL trail markers.
Walks by duration
Three municipal walks can be easily compared by their stated durations. The âPujada al Mirador passant per la Pedrera âMorenaââ takes 45 minutes. The walk to Mirador de Roques dâAse is listed as taking one hour, while âAnem âAl Critââ takes one hour and 45 minutes. There is a 15-minute difference between the two shorter durations, and another 45 minutes between the walk to the viewpoint and âAnem âAl Critââ. This allows you to choose a walk based on the time available. Access to the beach is difficult on the âAnem âAl Critââ walk; take this into account if the beach is part of your plans.
Viewpoint, water pond and coast
Mirador de Roques dâAse is located on Puig Roques dâAse at an elevation of 123 metres. The Roques dâAse area and its viewpoint are within the EIN âCastell-Cap Roigâ area of natural interest. At Pedrera Morena, a different landscape feature takes centre stage: there is a large natural water pond, which has already been stocked with animals such as ducks and fish.
Cala del Crit lies in an area of great natural and scenic interest. The cove is about 150 metres long and consists mostly of pebbles and coarse sand. Old fishermenâs huts are also part of the area and have been preserved there. The natural setting, beach material and fishing heritage describe different aspects of Cala del Crit without reducing it to a single attraction.
Gastronomy throughout the year
Various gastronomic events and other activities take place in Mont-Ras throughout the year, with gastronomy particularly prominent. These include gastronomic days dedicated to eating snails and snail dishes. In the second half of July, restaurants in Mont-Ras offer a gastronomic presentation and tasting. This seasonal focus adds a culinary highlight to the historical and scenic themes. If you would like to plan your stay around it, you can keep the different formats in mind: snail dishes feature at dedicated gastronomic days, while the presentation and tasting take place in the second half of July.
