Castles, churches and dry-stone structures provide a clear cultural focus when planning a stay in Llers. There are also geological features and a bus connection to Figueres. These topics can be explored individually and offer different starting points for choosing a destination.

Castles and a fortified past

Castell de Llers is located in the upper part of the town. The high medieval fortified complex is designated a Cultural Asset of National Interest in Catalonia. Its design includes a large cylindrical main tower and a trapezoidal wall surrounding it. The site’s history is also associated with a specific event: Castell de Llers is linked to resistance against troops during the Crusade against Catalonia in 1285. A network of eleven castles is also documented in the fortified historic area around Llers. The individual Castell and this wider network offer two different scales for exploring the town’s history.

Castell d’Hortal represents a different form of fortification. It was a simple rectangular structure adapted to the uneven terrain. A round tower was surrounded by a curtain wall; the surviving remains date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The two castles thus represent different architectural forms and historical reference points, without confusing their features.

Churches and traces of architectural history

The restored Església de Sant Quirze d’Olmells is a pre-Romanesque church dating from the 9th century and is no longer used for worship. It is located in a forest about three kilometres southwest of Llers, between Mas Molar and Mas Oliveres. The original vault survives in the apse. The church’s period and this specific architectural feature offer a distinct perspective on the architectural history of the town and its surroundings.

The Església Parroquial de Sant Julià tells a different story: it was built after the Spanish Civil War to replace an older church that had been destroyed in February 1939. Its apse features a mural by the painter Josep Ministral. The Porta dovellada is also connected to the town’s history: its bas-relief is on display at the Centre Social de Llersenc, the former Casal.

Dry-stone heritage and geology

At Paratge del Pla Vinyers in Llers’s Garriga d’Empordà, ten dry-stone huts are designated Local Cultural Assets of Special Interest (BCIL). The regional designation extends beyond this local group: Garriga d’Empordà is an important Catalan cultural heritage area for dry-stone construction. In 2014, 97 dry-stone huts in the municipalities of Llers, Avinyonet de Puigventós, Vilanant, Biure and Pont de Molins were designated BCIL. The ten huts at Pla Vinyers and the 97 huts across five municipalities therefore represent different geographical scales.

Another natural feature is Cova l’Avenc de la Calma. It is 52 metres deep and has a 175-metre-long cave passage. Several galleries and shafts shape its structure, along with sinter formations and a notably large prismatic calcite block. El Rissec is also part of the area’s landscape: it is a tributary of the Manol, whose waters flow into the Muga.

Bus connections and accommodation planning

A bus runs daily between Llers and Figueres. Departures from Llers are listed at 7:30 a.m., 4:00 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.; buses from Figueres back to Llers depart at 6:15 a.m., 2:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Check the timetable before travelling, as departure times may change. The different outbound and return times should be considered separately when planning your day.

When planning your accommodation in Llers, you can match your preferred focus with the connection to Figueres: would you like to focus on castles and churches, or are you particularly interested in dry-stone construction and geology? These topics offer different starting points for your stay; the bus times provide an additional, practical planning consideration.
