L'Armentera lies in the alluvial plain at the mouth of the Fluvià. The municipality is also one of those that make up the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà. This location gives the natural setting of the area a concrete context: the river mouth and wetlands help orient visitors, while historic buildings offer further insights into the area's history.
River landscape and protected area
The Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà consists of ponds, enclosed fields and flooded meadows. It provides a preferred habitat, especially for waterbirds. The areas around the Riu Vell and its two meanders are also included in the natural park, the PEIN and the Natura 2000 network. This makes it possible to understand the landscape both through the wider protected area and through the specifically named river areas.
The natural park can also be entered via l'Armentera. Those who choose nature as the focus of their stay will therefore find not only a connection to the river mouth, but also access to the Parc Natural. The different landscape features—ponds, meadows and meanders—offer a more precise picture than the general term “wetland.”
Hiking and route connections
The “Itinerari pel marge dret del Fluvià” is listed as a hiking route. The Ruta cicloturística L'Escala-Empúries al Fluvià cycle route passes through l'Armentera and then continues to the Fluvià River. The fifth stage of the GR 92 from Sant Pere Pescador to L'Escala also passes through the village.
For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish between these details: the cycle route has a specifically stated course from the village to the river, while l'Armentera is part of a GR 92 stage between two named places. The hiking trail is listed separately as its own named route.
Architectural history in the village
The parish of Sant Martí de Tours in l'Armentera is documented as early as 974. The present building of the Església de Sant Martí de Tours, however, dates from the 19th century and stands on a foundation dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. Several historical periods therefore come together at the church. Its neoclassical design includes a single-nave layout, a transept, side chapels and a pentagonal apse.
The surviving paintings by Joan B. Panyó also belong to the church: they depict the four mysteries of the Rosary. The architectural description and the paintings offer different ways of appreciating the Església—through its spatial layout and its surviving religious art.
Further precise dates can be found at Can Moret and Can Muñoz. Above the main portal of Can Moret is the inscription “JACOBUS VIADER ME FECIT – 1686”. The year 1820 is carved into the keystone of the flattened arch above the entrance to Can Muñoz. The two details refer to different features: an inscription above a portal in one case, and the keystone of an entrance arch in the other.
El molí de l'Armentera adds the historic use of a mill to this architectural history. It was considered the most important mill in the County of Empúries and was restored from 1733 onwards. The Búnquer in l'Armentera, in turn, is a T-shaped concrete structure comprising two rectangular sections; both sections have embrasures. Its description draws attention to a different type of structure from the church, entrances and mill.
Apples and local food culture
The Fira de la Poma also offers a concrete connection to local food culture. At its 29th edition, there were stalls selling different varieties of apples and natural apple juice. A description from 2025 also mentions demonstrations and tastings of cooked apple dishes and alioli with apple. Alongside the product itself, the preparation and tasting of apple dishes are therefore central to the festival activities described.
If you are considering l'Armentera when looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide in advance what you would like to focus on during your stay: the natural park and routes on the one hand, or architectural and local history and apple-related themes on the other. This can help you organise your interests and decide how you would like to discover the area.
