Roman road, medieval house, Romanesque churches and a circular route through an oak forest: La Vall De Bianya offers a range of cultural and landscape themes for a discovery trip. The area's history stretches from early documentary references to surviving buildings. Trails wind through valleys, forests and agricultural land. When planning your stay, first consider whether you would prefer to explore historic sites or spend time on the trails.
Meadows, forests and valleys
The landscape of Vall de Bianya combines meadows, forests and streams in valleys large and small. The municipality lies partly within the Parc Natural de la Zona VolcĂ nica de la Garrotxa. Within Vall de Bianya, the natural park covers 174.2 hectares. This protected landscape is therefore a specific part of the area, but does not describe the municipality as a whole.
One way to experience this setting is the Sant Miquel del Mont route. It starts in Hostalnou de Bianya and is a circular walking route. Along the way, it passes through the La Torre de Sant Pere oak forest, one of the few stands of pedunculate oaks in La Garrotxa, with particularly large trees. The route offers panoramic views of the Bas and Bianya valleys and leads to Castell del Coll, a fortified medieval house dating from the 11th century. This circular route thus combines woodland, valley views and a historic destination, without assuming any particular walking time or level of difficulty.
Trails with different focuses
The Vall de Bianya Greenway connects Llocalou and Hostalnou de Bianya on foot or by bicycle. It passes through cultivated fields and grazing land. The route is accessible with assistance or suitable for handbike users. This trail therefore focuses on connecting places and exploring an agricultural landscape, while the Sant Miquel del Mont route offers a different experience, with woodland, a circular walk and panoramic views.
Another tour starts in La Canya and passes through the valleys of Bianya, Sant Ponç and Vall del Bac. From Sant Pere Despuig, the Route 3 Vall dels Sentits follows the Riera de Santa LucĂa to the La Rovira bridge. These details offer different points of reference when choosing a route, without prescribing a particular order or connection between the tours.
The VĂa Romana del Capsacosta is also a notable piece of cultural heritage. It is designated a Bien Cultural de InterĂ©s Nacional. The only very well-preserved section is considered to be an eight-kilometre stretch between Sant Pau Vell, within the municipality of Sant Pau de SegĂşries in Ripollès, and Pas dels Traginers in Vall de Bianya in La Garrotxa. The VĂa appears to be of Roman origin and is described as a possible secondary branch of the Via Augusta. This historic route can thus be distinguished from the other trails: the focus here is on the surviving road.
Churches, architectural history and local cuisine
Several buildings reveal different chapters of local history. Sant Salvador de Bianya was consecrated in 1170. Sant Andreu de Porreres was the main church of the parish of Vall del Bac; its first documentary mention dates from 946. Santa Margarida de Bianya is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse.
The Torre de Sant Pere was built by Guillem Corona in the 15th century. Despite later additions, it retains the appearance of a fortified house. In contrast to the churches, this building therefore reveals a different architectural function. Those interested in cultural history can also visit the VĂa Romana, a section of road whose Roman character should be understood with due caution.
Farro is part of the local food culture. This dish is closely associated with Vall de Bianya and is made mainly from corn flour. The annual Fira del Farro celebrates the culture, gastronomy and area of Vall de Bianya. The dish and festival add a culinary focus to a trip that also takes in buildings and trails.
Sant Salvador de Bianya is also home to the Centre d'InterpretaciĂł del Paisatge de la Vall de Bianya, the municipality's visitor and information centre. When planning your accommodation, you can use these themes as a starting point: should your stay focus mainly on the churches and the Roman road, or would you prefer to explore the trails through valleys and woodland? This can help you tailor your choice to your travel interests.
