The church hill, stream and cultivated fields offer different ways to explore Sant Pere Despuig. The Ruta 3 Vall dels sentits follows the Riera de Santa Llúcia to the Pont de la Rovira; the Route de les pairalies i cultius leads from Sant Pere Despuig to Les Planes de Capsec. The church and Torre de Sant Pere add historical points of interest to the routes. This makes it possible to organise your choice of route and explore the area’s architectural history through specific destinations.
The Church Hill in the Plain
The church of Sant Pere Despuig was consecrated in 964. It stands on a hill in the small Cademunt mountain formation, in the middle of the Bianya plain. The year of consecration and the elevated location offer two different points of interest for a visit to the church: a historical date and a precisely defined position in the landscape. Ruta 3 also starts at the church, so the hill is a landmark for the beginning of this route as well.
The church can be reached from the C-153 via the road to Sant Martí de Solamal. The turn-off for the path up the hill is easy to find. Check current road conditions and signage before setting out, as both may change.
Two Routes with Different Highlights
The Ruta 3 Vall dels sentits follows the course of the Riera de Santa Llúcia to the Pont de la Rovira. Yellow markers guide you along the route; on the way to the bridge, you cross small streams. The stream and bridge define the character of this walk, while starting at the church connects it to the historic site. The Gorga de Planagem, a bathing spot that can be used for swimming in summer, is also located along the route from Sant Pere Despuig.
The Route de les pairalies i cultius takes a different course: it begins in Sant Pere Despuig and follows paths to Les Planes de Capsec. It heads into the fertile Vall de Capsec, surrounded by scattered farmsteads and cultivated land. This gives you specific differences to consider when choosing a route: one offers stream crossings, a bridge and a bathing spot that can be used in summer; the other passes through an agricultural valley to the named destination.
The Torre de Sant Pere and Its History
The Torre de Sant Pere is in the Sant Pere del Puig area, among cultivated fields. Despite later additions, it retains the appearance of a fortified house. The building is attributed to Guillen de Corana and dated to the end of the 15th century; the Torre may have been built following the Remença attacks. The church’s consecration in 964 and the Torre’s late medieval dating thus offer historical points of reference from different periods.
The roads around the Torre can also be described precisely: one road runs close to it, branches off the C-26 near Hostalnou and rejoins it beyond Sant Martí de Solamal. This route is a distinct landmark in the area. Together with the access road to the church from the C-153, it gives an overview of the local road connections without conflating the two approaches.
For your planning, you can consider the different interests separately: the church combines its consecration date with its hilltop location; Ruta 3 leads from there along the stream to the bridge, while the Route de les pairalies i cultius focuses on the Vall de Capsec. The Torre adds a building dated to the late medieval period and bearing the appearance of a fortified house.
