Alp opens up a broad sweep of history: from a prehistoric megalithic tomb to Romanesque and medieval buildings, and a castle built in 1896. There are also ski resorts and varied landscape views—a summit panorama and a path through sunny slopes and woodland. Before your trip, you can decide whether to focus on cultural history, winter sports or the landscape.

Church, castle and layers of history

The Església de Sant Pere d’Alp dates from the 11th century and is the only Romanesque building in the comarca with a three-aisled basilican plan. The three-aisle layout divides the church interior into three aisles, making it a key architectural feature. On the north wall of the presbytery is a 14th-century Gothic painting depicting Sant Cristòfol. The church thus brings together a Romanesque building and a later Gothic subject.

The Torre de Riu tells a different architectural story: this Romantic-style castle was built in 1896 on the site of the old Torre del Riu, a defensive bastion dating from the 14th century. The small Capella de la Divina Pastora is attached to the main building. The Torre therefore has two clearly dated layers: the medieval bastion and the late 19th-century castle.

In Alp’s old town, the Font de la Mare de Déu de la Guia on Font Square forms an architectural ensemble comprising a Marian image, a public washhouse and a livestock watering trough. This combination brings religious imagery together with traditional infrastructure. The particular interest for local history lies in how these different elements come together in one square.

The Dolmen de Paborda reaches far back into a different era. This megalithic tomb was built around 2000–1800 BC. Its date is therefore much earlier than the 11th-century church and the medieval buildings. History enthusiasts can explore buildings from different periods in Alp without conflating them into a single architectural story.

Winter sports and landscape

La Molina and Masella are Alp’s ski resorts for winter sports. This provides a distinct sporting focus alongside the architectural history. When planning your trip, you can weigh up culture and winter sports as separate interests; each offers its own perspective on Alp.

The landscape, too, can be seen from different perspectives. From the summit of La Tosa d’Alp, the panorama extends across the whole of Cerdanya and a large part of Catalonia. By contrast, trail 737 – Camí d’Alp a Set Fonts passes through sunny slopes and stretches of woodland. A far-reaching view and a route through changing landscapes thus offer two distinct ways to enjoy nature.

Near La Molina lies the medieval Castell de Segramorta, with remains of opus spicatum. The term refers to a herringbone masonry pattern; the surviving remains give the building a specific architectural feature. Along with the church and the Torre de Riu, the Castell adds another medieval example to the area’s historical highlights.
