Discover La Selva de Mar on short village walks, longer hikes and among historic buildings. When planning, two routes are particularly easy to distinguish: the village walk “Itinerari de La Selva de Mar” takes 15 to 20 minutes. The circular hike “Circular de La Selva de Mar” is 3.5 kilometres long, climbs 120 metres and has an estimated walking time of one hour and 15 minutes; it is easy in difficulty. This lets you tailor the time you spend exploring to the day you have available.
Paths and destinations around the village
For a longer walk, a restored and signposted path leads from La Selva de Mar along the CamĂ de les Suredes to the Dolmen de la Taula dels Lladres. The Taula dels Lladres in La Selva de Mar is a site of interest in the Cap de Creus Natural Park.
Another path passes the public washhouse and the Font de Mollor. It runs through a cork oak grove along the CamĂ del Dijous. This differs from the connecting route from the Monestir de Sant Pere de Rodes to La Selva de Mar, which follows the CamĂ dels Gatiens. Each path offers different landmarks: you can orient yourself by a dolmen, buildings in the village or a named connecting path, rather than treating all routes as similar village walks.
Churches, towers and local history
The Església Sant Esteve dates from the 16th century and is late Gothic. Its history also includes a great loss: during the Spanish Civil War, the church was blown up, destroying the entire façade and the interior altarpiece. By contrast, the original building of the Església Sant Sebastià dates from the 10th century. Several defensive towers from the 16th and 17th centuries have been preserved in La Selva de Mar. The defensive wall protected the village from pirates. Together, these buildings offer different insights into local history—from early church architecture to later fortifications.
The historic building Multiespai El Trull is also one of the village’s cultural attractions: it was converted into a multi-purpose cultural space with an olive oil museum and exhibitions. The former schools of the Centre Cultural Les Escoles were built during the Second Republic. These two places therefore represent different chapters in local architectural history, and were not built during the same period.
Waterworks, fountains and local traditions
The Riera de la Selva de Mar flows through the village of the same name. The Ponts de la Riera are stone bridges dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Another notable structure is the Font de Mollor: it consists of a broad round-arched structure made of slate slabs, with a vaulted cistern and a continuous stone bench. The municipal washhouse, Safareig municipal, was built in 1926 and is listed in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
The Font dels Lledoners is part of Tomàs Garcés’s poetic landscape; one of his sayings can be found there. The Salt del molà waterfall takes its name from an old mill that stood on the site until the 17th century. Those interested in the stories behind place names will find another way to connect with the landscape here: one name refers to the former use of the water, another to a poetic association.
Tastings are also among the activities on offer locally. La Botigueta del Trull offers wine tastings, while Mas Estela offers tours and tastings. The annual Castanyada is celebrated with chestnuts, panellets and Garnatxa. The routes described differ clearly in duration, length, elevation gain and destination.
