An Arab barrel vault, a digitised photo archive and a seasonal waterfall reveal different sides of Sentmenat. When planning your visit, you can choose between local history and Modernisme on the one hand, and trails and landscapes on the other.

Castle and Historic Traces

Construction of Castell de Sentmenat began around 1030. The castle stands on a rocky spur in the Sierra; from there, views stretch across the Vallès plain, the valley towards Castellar and the mountains to the north. Archaeological investigations in 2009 uncovered Roman, Visigothic and Arab remains. The finds include an Arab barrel vault.

The church of Sant Menna is also part of the town’s early history. According to the municipal historical interpretation, it was first built in the 10th to 11th century as a continuation of a late Romanesque settlement. The Església Vella de Sant Menna is listed as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Local (BCIL). Part of an apse dating to the 9th to 10th century was identified in the area of the bell tower and beneath the present-day Rectoria; underground structures are suspected there.

Museum, Modernisme and Theatre

The Museu-Arxiu de Sentmenat is primarily ethnographic and anthropological in focus. Agricultural tools, including equipment used in viticulture, as well as objects and documents illustrate the town’s agricultural and textile-industry past. An important digitised photo archive shows Sentmenat at the beginning of the 20th century and how it developed.

The Itinerari modernista takes you past the era’s most important buildings and highlights their notable features. The Ruta Modernista de Sentmenat is an urban route with no particular difficulties. For a cultural-history itinerary, the focus is therefore on the buildings and their architectural features. The local theatre is organised under the Societa Coral Obrera la Glòria Sentmenatenca, which is home to several groups. The programme may change, so check event dates before your visit.

Trails with Different Highlights

The Ruta al Puig de la Creu starts at the car park on Passeig de Josep Duran, in front of Can Sorts school. It leaves Sentmenat via Can Palau in a north-westerly direction. Its landscape highlights include views from Puig de la Creu, numerous springs and the Salt de Montllor.

The Ruta de Torre Roja i el Pessebre is a hiking route; its main highlights are the RacĂł del Pessebre and Torre Roja. On the Ruta-Joc del Castell de Sentmenat, an app guides you to hidden QR codes. As trail conditions and app details may change, check both before setting out.

The circular route to Fuente de Bou and Cascada de Guanta starts at Plaza de la Vila and first climbs Passeig de Anselm Clavé. Fuente de Bou is a natural spring with a small play and picnic area. Cascada de Guanta is a waterfall of considerable height, which can only be experienced during rainy periods. Its seasonal water levels are a key difference to consider when choosing this outing over the other trail options mentioned.
