Explore Piera through two distinct themes: the history of Castell de Piera and the landscape of Les Flandes, shaped by water. Walking tours and trails offer further perspectives on the area’s architecture and surroundings. When planning your visit, consider whether you would like to focus on the historic centre, architectural details or a climb with views over the valley.
Castell de Piera and Santa Maria
Castell de Piera, also known as Castell de Fontanet, is a medieval fortress. The castle was first mentioned in a written document in 955. A major historicist alteration was made in the early 20th century. The site therefore brings together a very old origin and a later architectural design.
The church of Santa Maria de Piera stands beside the castle. Inside, the Sant Crist de Piera is venerated; it is a replica of the original 13th-century carving. It was created by the Soslé Saenz de Medrano brothers. The original was destroyed during the Civil War; only a fragment of the hand and the crown of thorns remain. The castle and church thus offer different ways to explore Piera’s history: the development of a fortress and the remembrance of a destroyed work of art.
Discover the town’s architecture
The architectural tour takes you through Piera’s streets to discover its built heritage. It is divided into four major stages that reflect the town’s social, cultural and artistic changes. The modernist stage is distinguished by striking buildings and lavish ornamentation. Those interested in architecture will find a different perspective here than by focusing on the castle: the emphasis is not only on individual buildings, but also on the architectural heritage along the streets and the changes explored across the tour’s stages.
Walks and valley views
Route 6 is a family-friendly walk through the historic centre and up to Castell de Piera. It ends at the Font del Prat recreation area. Route 5 starts in Ca n'Aguilera and climbs to TurĂł de l'Avellana. From there, you can enjoy impressive views across the valley. The two routes offer different experiences: Route 6 focuses on the town centre and castle, while Route 5 offers a climb and panoramic views. If you would like to choose based on whether you prefer historic areas or a viewpoint, these destinations offer a clear guide.
Les Flandes and getting your bearings
Les Flandes is a 64-hectare natural area of geological and scenic value. Water erosion has shaped its deposits of clay, marl and limestone. The landscape is therefore interesting not only as a natural area, but also for the geological processes that formed it. At the information boards near Font del Prat, you can explore different ways to cross Les Flandes. The Biblioteca de Piera serves as a tourist information point; visitors can pick up route leaflets for Les Flandes there. You can therefore find your way around the natural area using both the boards on site and the route leaflets.
