Fonollosa offers travelers several distinct highlights: the towers and churches of Fals, marked trails through the local countryside, and wine visits by appointment. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between a guided tour with scheduled times, your own hiking or mountain biking plans, and an arranged visit to a winery.

Torres de Fals: Towers and Guided Tour

The monumental Torres de Fals complex comprises the towers of the former Castle of Fals, the Church of Sant Vicenç de Fals, its rectory, and the cemetery. Two towers remain from the defensive complex: one is 19 meters tall and the other 17 meters. The visitor program combines a guided tour of the exterior of the complex with a visit to the church’s museum interior. An audiovisual presentation about Engonça’s will is part of the visit.

Guided tours take place on the third Sunday of each month at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Places are limited, and advance reservations are required. Check the dates and reservation information before setting out.

Marked Trails and Distinctive Landscapes

The Camí de les Tres Esglésies connects Fonollosa, Camps and the Torres de Fals via Raval del Perejutge. There are also marked circular trails for hiking and mountain biking. They make it easy to follow the local tracks and paths. If you plan to take one of these routes, check the route details locally before setting off.

A distinctive geological feature is the Roques del Diable: between the Torrent de Bacardit or Torrent de Camps and the Torrent de Fonollosa, a raised limestone platform lies above the fields. Its karst-shaped surface has numerous holes, marks, and depressions, some of which resemble footprints, grimaces, or feet. The access route is signposted; vegetation currently covers the site and limits visibility. Check the conditions again locally.

The Alzina centenĂ ria del Mas Querol is another striking natural landmark in Fonollosa. The Generalitat de Catalunya has designated the holm oak a monumental tree. Its trunk has a circumference of 5.64 meters at the base.

Churches with Different Building Periods

Santa Maria del Grau de Fals has a 12th-century Romanesque nave and a pre-Romanesque atrium. The church stands beside Mas Grauet on a small rise and overlooks the Fals plain. Sant Andreu de Comallonga, by contrast, reflects several phases of construction and alteration: the Gothic section defines the building, while fragments of the earlier Romanesque structure remain. The chapel is near Mas Sant Andreu, in the northern part of the municipality of Fonollosa, bordering Sant Mateu de Bages.

The present-day Church of Santa Creu de Fonollosa is an almost neoclassical building dating to around the 17th century. It was built in place of an older temple, probably Romanesque, which was demolished. Together, Fonollosa’s churches represent different architectural periods: from the pre-Romanesque atrium and Romanesque elements to Gothic features and a later replacement building.

Wine Visits by Appointment

At Finca Jaumandreu in Fonollosa, Celler Més que Paraules produces wines with the Denominació d’Origen Catalunya designation. By appointment, the winery offers tours of the farmhouse, cellar, and vineyards, as well as guided tastings led by an oenologist. An appointment is required for this part of your stay; winery tours and tastings are therefore distinct from the marked circular trails and the scheduled guided tours at Torres de Fals.

Traditions and Event Dates

The Pessebre Vivent del Bages began in 1977 in Fals and is now held every Christmas, with around sixteen performances and approximately 260 participants. If you are planning your trip around this tradition, check the specific performance dates in advance.

At the Aplec del Grau in Fals, the traditional Ball de l’Almorratxa is performed alongside the Ball de Cascavells and the Corrandes de Fals, followed by Sardana music. Check the dates for this event before you travel, too.
