When planning a trip to Argençola, it helps to start with two practical questions: Which historical sites interest you, and how much time would you like to spend hiking? The town’s history stretches from an early medieval castle to a church consecrated in 1891; the two hiking routes differ considerably in duration and distance.

Castle, Church and Historic Routes

Castell d'Argençola is in the highest part of the town. Màger built it in the early 11th century. Its location and date of construction give the castle a distinct place in Argençola’s early history.

Sant Llorenç was consecrated in 1891 to replace the former parish church. The earlier church is documented as far back as 1032. Several disc-shaped gravestones from the former cemetery have been preserved inside Sant Llorenç. These grave markers add a detail about the former burial ground to the church’s architectural history.

Historic travel routes are also part of the town’s history. The old Camí Ral from Barcelona to Lleida ran through the municipality of Argençola, following the same route as the N-II road. Before 1228, Santa Maria del Camí served as a chapel and hospital for travelers on the King’s Road from Barcelona to Lleida. Thus, the history of travel appears in different forms: as a route through the municipality and as historical support for travelers.

Hiking with Different Time Commitments

The “Ruta a peu Argençola, Rocamora, Contrast, Argençola” is an easy 12-kilometer hike with 200 meters of elevation gain and a stated duration of seven hours. This makes it a longer outing, for which you can set aside a substantial part of the day.

The also-easy “Ruta a peu Pou de Gel” is four kilometers long, has 152 meters of elevation gain and a stated duration of one hour and 30 minutes. The two hikes therefore differ not only in distance, but also considerably in the time they take.

So the “easy” rating alone is not the only factor to consider when choosing. If you would like to set aside a longer block of time for hiking, you can take the seven-hour estimate for the first route into account; the shorter hike is listed as taking an hour and a half.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Festa Major d'Argençola is held every year around August 10 in the town’s streets and squares. If you’re planning a stay around this time, it’s a specific seasonal reference point. If you’d like to plan around the festival, it’s best to check the dates for your travel period.

At an earlier Festa del Tió d'Argençola program, participating families searched the forest for Tió logs and took part in workshops, games and children’s entertainment. The search itself was part of the activities, complemented by other playful offerings.
