Discover Abrera through a variety of themes: Romanesque architectural history, traces of the Spanish Civil War and natural areas along the Llobregat. There is also an art installation in nature and a guided wine tour at an organically farmed agricultural estate. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your trip, from culture and nature to local winegrowing.

Romanesque Architecture and History in Abrera

The Església de Sant Pere d'Abrera was built around the 12th century. This approximate date places the church in the Romanesque period without specifying a single year of construction. The area of Voltrera and Castell de Voltrera Castle offer another historical connection: the area is mentioned as early as 996, while the castle is first documented in 1027. The two dates therefore refer to different things—the mention of the area and the first documentary evidence of the castle.

The surviving architectural remains also tell the story of Castell de Voltera. They stand on a hill 218 metres high and offer views over the Llobregat and Anoia valleys. Here, a precise elevation and two named river valleys come together; the setting adds a landscape perspective to the historical dates.

Another historical trace is the archaeological site of Les trinxeres de la Guerra Civil Espanyola. It was excavated and made accessible following archaeological work in 2017 and 2018. The defensive complex covers about 4,500 square metres and consists of several trench lines, four shelters and three firing positions. Unlike the church, the focus here is not a single building, but a complex made up of several elements associated with the Spanish Civil War.

The Llobregat, Protected Areas and Birdlife

The Sant Hilari estate extends to the riverbed of the Llobregat and is part of Natura 2000, the Parc Rural del Montserrat and the ZEPA Special Protection Area for birds. Abrera’s natural surroundings are also designated as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). Surveys in Abrera recorded 161 bird species, including resident, summer, wintering and migratory species. The Llobregat surroundings form a reservoir of biodiversity in Abrera, on the edge of the Barcelona metropolitan area.

A separate description of the landscape focuses on the Zona natural de Can Morral. It includes continuous native woodlands, riparian forests and diverse herbaceous meadows. Together with the protected areas and bird surveys, this view of Abrera conveys different aspects of nature: designated protected areas, recorded bird species and specific landscape features.

Art, Winegrowing and a Regional Route

El Caramell is an art installation in nature. It was built using dry-stone walling in the Torrent Gran area. Alongside the historic buildings, it offers an artistic way to experience the landscape: dry-stone walling is part of the installation, and its location is the Torrent Gran area.

Can Morral del Molí is an organically farmed agricultural estate producing wine and olives, located between Abrera, Martorell and Ullastrell. It offers guided wine tours of the vineyards, with wine tasting and food. The guided format sets this activity apart from simply viewing winegrowing as part of the local agricultural scene. Check the booking conditions before your visit.

Abrera is also on the fourth stage of the Camí de Sant Jaume del Llobregat. This stage runs from Martorell via Abrera to Esparreguera. If you are planning a trip on this route, check the current route in advance, as details may change. Abrera therefore offers both individual historical and landscape themes and a section of a regional route.
