A 13th-century tower, a 17th-century church and a history shaped by a fire in 1788: Yuncler brings together different periods, archaeological traces and vibrant local traditions. When planning your stay, you can choose to focus on architecture, festivals or routes through the agricultural countryside.

Church and Building History

Yuncler’s parish church is Santa María Magdalena. Its tower dates from the 13th century, while the church building dates from the 17th century. On the exterior walls, Toledo-style masonry meets a high plinth of granite blocks. The building therefore offers a way to distinguish different materials and construction periods.

A fire on October 19, 1788, destroyed the church’s interior, sacristy, organ, roof and various objects. Reconstruction began on July 4, 1789; the Mudejar tower survived. On February 11, 1793, the church reopened for worship and was blessed. These dates give the architecture a specific historical context without conflating the older tower with the later church building.

Another local structure is the Fuente de los Cuatro Caños, also known as El Pilar. It was restored in 1889; its original age is not known precisely. The Chimenea de Cerámica, meanwhile, is the chimney of the Aguilares brickworks and was built in the 1950s or 1960s. Together, the church, fountain and chimney offer different ways to explore Yuncler’s religious, architectural and industrial history.

Las Lunas: Archaeology in a Wetland

The Yacimiento de Las Lunas is a Bronze Age archaeological site in a wetland. Two elongated, almost rectangular houses with apsidal ends were discovered there, aligned east to west. The settlement has been dated to between 870 and 530 BC. The recovered remains are kept at the Museo de Santa Cruz. This means you can explore Las Lunas through the landscape of the site, the archaeological findings and their later preservation.

Archival collections are another topic connected with Yuncler. Some of the CNT collections are held here, including a periodicals library, audiovisual materials, posters and various archival sections. The FundaciĂłn Anselmo Lorenzo has consultation areas for documentary collections, with publications on anarchism and audiovisual content. If you are planning a visit for this purpose, check the visiting arrangements before you travel.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Fiestas del Carmen on July 16 and 17 include masses and processions, bull festivities with traditional encierros and bullfights, as well as sporting and cultural activities, music, popular celebrations and fireworks. Since dates and programs can vary from year to year, it is worth checking the details for your intended travel dates in advance.

San Isidro is celebrated on the Saturday closest to May 15. The listed program includes a mass, a procession, a musical performance and fireworks; details of this recurring tradition can also vary each year. For Los Patios de Mayo, residents decorate their courtyards with crosses on a Saturday in May. A folk group sings and dances jotas there, and participation can vary from year to year. The three occasions therefore differ both in their dates and in the types of celebrations described.

Another local tradition is Las Puches on November 1. Groups of residents prepare a sweet-and-savory dish made with flour, water, sugar, anise and toasted bread. These ingredients give the custom its own culinary character; details about public participation may vary.
