Chueca lies where the plain meets the Montes de Toledo. Its traditional layout and intimate scale invite you to explore the town on foot. Country trails also lead from Chueca into the surrounding Montes de Toledo, offering walks and routes. Alongside the landscape, religious buildings and festival traditions shape the town’s cultural character.
Heritage in church and sculpture
The parish church of Santa MarĂa Magdalena is one of Chueca’s religious monuments. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, its nave is spanned along its entire length by a MudĂ©jar coffered ceiling. The construction period and continuous ceiling structure each highlight a different aspect: one points to the building’s historical context, while the other draws attention to a specific feature of its design. Together, they make the church a notable point of interest for anyone interested in religious architecture.
The Ermita de San Isidro is also one of Chueca’s religious monuments. The SantĂsimo Cristo del Olvido offers another facet of religious art: the figure is made of corn paste, dates from the 16th century and was created by Tarascans from Michoacán, Mexico. Unlike the church, the focus here is on the material, origin and date of creation of an individual sculpture. Chueca thus offers cultural themes ranging from architectural history to the story of a specific work of art.
Festivals throughout the year
An annual romerĂa in honour of Saint Isidore is associated with the Ermita de San Isidro. It takes place beside the chapel on 15 May. The patron saint festivals in honour of the SantĂsimo Cristo del Olvido follow in September: they are held on the third Sunday of the month and include a procession through the streets of Chueca. The two traditions therefore differ both in timing and form—a romerĂa at the chapel in May and a procession as part of the September festivals. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the exact event date before you leave.
Townscape and rural surroundings
The municipality lies in a landscape transition zone, with a compact town centre and the gentle elevations typical of the Montes de Toledo. Low hills and cultivated fields define the surroundings. In town, the traditional layout and intimate scale draw attention to its historic townscape; the country trails offer a different focus. They lead from Chueca into the surrounding Montes de Toledo, offering walks and routes. Exploring the town on foot and following trails through the rural landscape can thus be enjoyed as different sides of a stay.
The Ermita de San Roque offers another connection with the landscape. It lies outside the municipality on elevated ground and affords good views of Chueca and its natural surroundings. While the trails from Chueca lead into the surrounding Montes de Toledo, this viewpoint directs your gaze towards the town and the landscape. Together, they offer two different perspectives: travelling along country trails and taking in the view from an elevated spot.
