Almendral de la Cañada is situated at a high altitude in the Sierra de San Vicente, which completely surrounds the town. Its rugged landscape is characterised by mountain terrain, slopes and ravines. The surrounding area is home to natural viewpoints offering sweeping views of the Sierra and nearby valleys. When planning a hike, both the landscape and specific trail features such as length, shape, starting point and route are therefore of interest.

Mountain Landscapes and Vegetation

The natural surroundings of Almendral de la Cañada are a good example of Mediterranean woodland. Notable specimens include holm oak, oak, olive, mulberry and ash trees; cork oak and Pyrenean oak are also native species. On the northern slope of the Sierra, the PR-TO 46 passes through dehesas, oak forests and pine forests. The focus is therefore on both the rugged mountain terrain and a variety of named tree species and woodland landscapes.

Hiking Trails in the Area

The SL-TO 04 is 6.9 kilometres long, circular in shape and classified as easy. It is promoted by the municipality of Almendral de la Cañada. Its length, circular route and difficulty rating provide concrete details for personal planning. Published route information may change; please check it before your hike. The PR-TO 46 starts at the town hall square and heads south towards the Cañada Real. South of Almendral de la Cañada, the SL-TO 04 joins the PR-TO 46 and shares a route with the Cañada Real Leonesa. This provides a named starting point, an initial direction and a connection between the trails for orientation.

Views from the Viewpoint

The Mirador de Almendral de la Cañada, on the PR-TO 46, offers panoramic views of the town, the Tiétar Valley and the southeastern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos. From views of the town, the panorama opens out across the valley to the mountain slopes. The viewpoint thus combines a view of Almendral itself with a broader perspective of the surrounding landscape.

El Caño and Ana de San Bartolomé

El Caño is a livestock watering trough with two spouts, made from a single granite basin. The engraved dates 1775 and 1886 mark its reconstructions; they refer to renovations, not to a single year of construction. Blessed Ana de San Bartolomé offers another tangible link to the town's history: she was born in Almendral de la Cañada in 1549 and was secretary to Teresa of Jesus. Her birthplace and professional role offer different points of connection to her biography. The dates refer to different things: 1549 marks Ana's birth, while 1775 and 1886 mark the reconstructions of El Caño.
