The church of Novés brings together building phases from different centuries. The main chapel and transept are works of 15th-century Gothic architecture; the rest of the church was built between 1630 and 1664. The church is laid out as a basilica with three naves, separated by twelve stone Doric columns. This places the late medieval architectural style alongside the church building erected later.

Historic houses and hermitages

The Casa de las Cadenas has a different history of use: the building was a former synagogue and was later used as a residence by prominent figures. Lope de Vega lived there between 1590 and 1605. The Casa is privately owned. Its history thus connects an earlier religious use with a later residential function and a clearly dated association with Lope de Vega.

The hermitages also offer their own historical and architectural points of interest. The Ermita de San Roque was consecrated in 1619 by Bishop Melchor de Soria y Vera. At the Ermita del Cristo de la Sangre, the rectangular nave ends at the altar in a polygonal apse. Worked granite blocks remain at the four corners, associated with the Stations. Check the opening arrangements for the Ermita del Cristo locally before visiting.

Walking tour and Semana Santa

A traditional special walking tour includes the church of San Pedro Apóstol and the hermitages of San Roque and Cristo. If you plan to take this tour, check before travelling when it takes place.

Semana Santa de Novés is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional (Regional Tourist Interest Festival). On Palm Sunday, the procession currently starts at the Ermita del Cristo de la Sangre and makes its way to the church. Dates and programme vary from year to year. So check the details for your travel year if you would like to include the procession in your plans.

Camino del Sureste and Camino Natural del Tajo

The Camino del Sureste route includes a 39.670-kilometre stage from Toledo to Novés. It enters Novés via Calle de la Cruz Verde. As route details may change, check the current trail markings before setting out.

From Novés, you can also walk or cycle part of the Camino Natural del Tajo through agricultural landscapes and natural areas. The two routes offer different points of reference: a specific stage length is given for the Camino del Sureste, while part of the Camino Natural del Tajo can be travelled on foot or by bike.

Market, castle and accommodation

The market in Novés takes place on Thursdays in the Plaza de España. As market days may change, check the day of the week again before your trip. The nearby Castillo de San Silvestre can be visited from the outside; a permit is required to access the interior. Check the access requirements before visiting.

The stage directory lists the Albergue Parroquial de Noves as accommodation for pilgrims. If you would like to stay there, enquire about availability and facilities before travelling.
