Azucaica can be explored through two distinct routes, a historic church connection and the Candelaria celebrations. The circular walking route to Cuevas de Higares is clearly defined: ten kilometres long, circular and of moderate difficulty. The Vías Verdes Toledo route runs between Santa Bárbara and Azucaica and crosses the Tagus on a bridge along the former Bargas railway line. The history of the Ntra. Sra. de la Candelaria temple and festival traditions from different years add to this. This lets you distinguish between a specific circular walk, the Vías Verdes route and cultural points of interest.
Two Routes with Different Features
The Azucaica-Cuevas de Higares circular walking route is ten kilometres long and classified as a circular route of moderate difficulty. It follows natural terrain and a narrow path and is suitable for hikers. Its length, route type and difficulty give you practical guidance when planning a walk and assessing its demands. The meeting point for the route is Azucaica municipal swimming pool. Check its current conditions separately before setting out.
The Vías Verdes Toledo route offers a different point of reference: it runs between Santa Bárbara and Azucaica and is suitable for walkers, cyclists and people with reduced mobility. Along the route, the Tagus is crossed on a bridge on the former Bargas railway line. The route thus combines a river crossing with the alignment of a former railway line. By comparison, the circular walk provides specific details about distance and difficulty, while the Vías Verdes route centres on the named locations, user groups and bridge over the Tagus.
Church and Local History
The Ntra. Sra. de la Candelaria church is located at Plaza Azucaica 1. A temple dedicated to this devotion has stood in Azucaica since the 13th century; in 1996, it became a parish church. The two dates relate to different aspects: the 13th century marks the temple’s origins, while 1996 marks the later institutional step of becoming a parish church. Here, you can encounter both a long-standing religious connection and a clearly dated milestone in its later history.
Candelaria: Celebrations and Traditions
The Candelaria celebrations in Azucaica included religious events, a benefit concert, fireworks, musical performances and traditional games in 2023. The programme combined religious and musical occasions with a concert and social activities. The celebration therefore cannot be reduced to a single programme item: it includes various ways for people to come together.
A candlelit procession was also held in 2019, during which the Virgin was accompanied through the streets of the neighbourhood. After the celebrations ended, sweet wine was served and Roscas were distributed. These examples come from different years; dates and individual activities may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around Candelaria, check whether events are scheduled during your travel year and when they will take place.
