There are two ways to plan a visit to Nuño Gómez: explore its historic buildings and watermills, or focus on trails and scenery. There are also recurring festivals with specific dates. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on cultural heritage, nature or a festival.

Mills and local history

There are two watermills in the municipality of Nuño Gómez, on the seasonal waterways of Linares and La Dehesa. The older of the two was built about 500 years ago. The town also has a history spanning several eras: the resettlement begun by the conquistador Nuño Gómez started in 1088 and continued throughout the 12th century. Nuño Gómez was granted villa status in 1655. The history of the mills and the historical milestones highlight different aspects: one focuses on the built heritage, the other on the town’s development and its later change in status.

Churches and local cultural heritage

The Ermita de la Concepción dates from the 18th century, has a rectangular floor plan and features a vernacular architectural style. The Iglesia de la Asunción dates from the 16th to the 17th century. It, too, is rectangular, has a single nave and is divided into four sections; it is also included in the inventory of regionally significant cultural heritage in the province of Toledo. Single-nave means that the church has just one nave; the four sections describe its layout as well. The two religious buildings differ in age: the Ermita dates from a later century than the Iglesia. Nuño Gómez’s ethnographic heritage also includes a potro de herrar (a traditional horse-shoeing frame).

Trails and nature

Nuño Gómez is the starting point for the Ruta de la Sierra de San Vicente, which follows traditional paths. The route offers panoramic views and the chance to discover the biodiversity typical of Mediterranean woodlands. The area along the Arroyo de la Chorrera is scenically valuable and includes vegetated areas as well as suitable places for walking. If panoramic views and the biodiversity typical of Mediterranean woodlands appeal to you, consider the Ruta; if you would prefer a walk through vegetated areas, head towards the Arroyo.

Festival dates for planning your trip

Festival dates can also shape when you travel. The festival of San Sebastián takes place on January 20 and includes a mass and a reception at the town hall. The patronal festival of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is on August 15. The festival of San Roque takes place on August 16, lasts four days and includes a mass, a procession and a verbena (open-air festival). The August dates are one calendar day apart and are separate festivals. The annual programme may vary; if you are planning to travel specifically for a celebration, check that year’s programme in advance.
