In Los Navalucillos, routes lead to summit views, river landscapes and a waterfall more than 20 metres high. At the Ethnographic Museum, the Ermita de las Saleras and the Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián, you can discover other facets of the town. When planning your stay, you can consider nature and architectural history as distinct areas of interest.
Nature trails with different destinations
The Ruta Rocigalgo passes over the Collado del Chorro at an altitude of 1,318 metres, then continues northeast to the summit of Rocigalgo at 1,451 metres. Along the way, it offers sweeping panoramic views and opportunities to spot vultures, eagles, roe deer and red deer. The elevations and the route to the summit give this trail a different focus from the paths along the Río Pusa.
The Ruta Hoces del Río Pusa focuses on riverside vegetation and distinctive trees: the route passes ash and willow trees, a rare mostajo tree and a large cork oak. Its final section leads to the Embalse del Rusa. By contrast, from the rocky ridges of the Ruta Solana de las Callejas, the view takes in a succession of named landscapes: Sierra de Gredos, cultivated plains, Los Navalucillos, Río Pusa, La Calanchera, Valle del Chorro, Sierra de la Botija and Vallecasar. If you choose routes based on their distinctive scenery, these trails differ in their riverside vegetation, individual trees, expansive views and summit vistas.
The Ruta de El Chorro leads to the El Chorro waterfall, which is more than 20 metres high. Another option associated with water is the Ruta Sierra de la Botija: it follows the left bank of the Río Pusa to the foot of the Sierra de La Botija and ends at small pools in the Río Pusa. Swimming is possible there when weather conditions are suitable; the weather is an explicit consideration when choosing this route.
The Ruta Minas y Collado de la Ermita also has its own focus. It can start at the Las Becerras recreation area and follows a forest track towards El Chorro. The route leads to mines that are fenced off to prevent them from collapsing and disappearing. On the Ruta Agroturismo Los Lucillos, after crossing the Río Pusa via stepping stones, you reach three Lucillos near the Charco de la Mora. These specific destinations set the routes apart more clearly than a broad division into nature and culture.
Museum and architectural history
The Museo Etnográfico de los Navalucillos explores the history and traditions of the local population. Its subject areas range from agriculture and livestock farming to customs and everyday life. Visitors can use a leaflet for a self-guided tour; visits are usually accompanied by a guide who works there. If this type of visit is important to your plans, ask in advance about the current options.
The Ermita de Ntra. Sra. la Virgen de las Saleras dates from 1632. Its Renaissance style and Latin-cross floor plan provide two clear points of reference for its architecture. The paintings inside the dome were created in 1822. This allows the construction date and the later interior decoration to be understood as separate historical details.
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián brings together several architectural features and dates. The main altar was carved in 1702, gilded in 1718 and attributed to the school of José de Churriguera. At the north entrance, also known as La Umbría, there is a brick ogee arch. The tower, also built of brick, has been rebuilt several times and is crowned by a depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. When looking at the parish church, you can consider the altar, entrance and tower as distinct parts of its traditional design.
Local information and traditions
The Los Navalucillos Tourist Office is located in the Ethnographic Museum and provides information about Cabañeros National Park and its routes. As the visitor office's location may change, it is advisable to check locally before travelling.
Local traditions also include a public demonstration of tasks involved in a traditional home slaughter. These include butchering the pig, kneading and stuffing. Check the exact dates locally in advance. Together, the routes, museum, buildings and this demonstration offer different starting points for choosing what to do in Los Navalucillos.
