Villacañas reveals two distinctive sides: the lagoon landscape of La Mancha Húmeda and museums covering everything from traditional everyday life to religious art. Routes through the landscape and individual buildings also offer reasons to get to know the town from different perspectives.
Lagoons and routes through the wetland
La Larga, Laguna de Peña Hueca, Laguna de Tirez, La Redondilla and La Gramosa are near Villacañas and are part of the La Mancha Húmeda Biosphere Reserve. Laguna Larga de Villacañas covers 84 hectares. It has no outlet and has been shaped by human influences; a large flamingo colony lives there. Its presence may vary depending on the season and water conditions.
At 89 hectares, Laguna de Tirez is slightly larger. It also has no outlet and is hypersaline—that is, highly salty—and may dry out completely in summer. The two lagoons therefore differ in more than just their area: Laguna Larga is characterized by its flamingo colony and human impact, while Tirez is distinguished in particular by its high salt content and the possibility of drying out.
The first stage of the Camino Natural de los Humedales de La Mancha runs between Villacañas and Quero. A spur of less than one kilometre branches off the main route to Laguna Larga and the Observatorio del Flamenco. As local access conditions may vary, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning a specific trip.
Another route is the Vía Verde del Trenillo: this 24.98-kilometre developed route passes through Villacañas. It is suitable for walkers, cyclists and people with reduced mobility. This offers different options: a route with a spur to the lagoon and observatory, or a longer developed route that passes through the town.
Museums spanning everyday life and religious art
A municipal description from 2018 calls the exhibition at the Museo Municipal Etnográfico de Villacañas a permanent display about the traditional lives of people in this area. Its themes include occupations from the past, everyday objects and tools, living spaces, and other aspects of daily life over time.
The Museo Municipal del Silo de Villacañas is housed in one of the town’s distinctive excavated silos; such silos are examples of the vernacular architecture of La Mancha. The museum recreates scenes of traditional everyday life and displays agricultural tools, household items and furniture. It also features objects relating to agriculture, food production and local customs. The collection focuses on recreated scenes of daily life and objects associated with work and the home.
The Casa-Museo de la Tía Sandalia offers a glimpse into a different artistic world. A self-taught artist created religious art and biblical scenes in her own home. She used plaster, lime, tempera paints, cardboard, fabrics, wire, branches, vine wood, household tools and even her own hair. The collection includes 66 freestanding sculptures, 40 bas-reliefs, and 26 canvases and frescoes. Alongside the subjects depicted, the unusual variety of materials used is also part of this glimpse into her work.
Architectural history and living tradition
The Ermita de San Roque was built around 1835 in the vernacular architectural style and has a single rectangular nave. Other architectural details point to a military influence; the Cross of Saint John can also be found in Villacañas. Details of military-influenced architecture and the Cross of Saint John can be found in Villacañas at, among other places, the Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de la Viga, the Casa de la Tercia and the monumental Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
The Danzantes y Santísimo Cristo de la Viga celebration features dances with sticks, castanets and ribbons. The specific programme may vary, so if you plan your trip around the celebration, check the event dates.
When choosing a hotel in Villacañas, it helps to consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: lagoons and routes, or museums, art and architectural history. The places and themes described offer different starting points, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.
