The Itinerario Sendero Natural is about 10 kilometres long and runs through Dehesa Boyal. This wooded area of just under 400 hectares includes holm oak groves, a pine forest and pastureland. Well-maintained paths are suitable for walking and cycling. Wildlife includes rabbits, foxes, genets, wild boar, roe deer and red deer; sightings may of course vary. The nature theme thus ranges from a specific route to different landscape zones and their wildlife.

Laguna de las Limas and PilĂłn de Carrasca

Laguna de las Limas is the largest livestock watering place in the municipality of La Calzada. It has become a recreation and leisure area of great ecological value, with a diverse range of fauna and flora. A Late Roman necropolis was discovered beside the lagoon, bringing landscape and archaeological heritage together.

Pilón de Carrasca is a stone spring with three basins. Its water comes from the natural underground spring Las Madres del Pilón. The site is currently used for walks, picnics and viewing the night sky. Before visiting, check whether current conditions suit your planned activities. The Eucaliptos grounds are also home to an approximately 30-metre-high eucalyptus tree, listed in the catalogue of notable individual trees under the name “El 31”.

Buildings and traces of history

Plaza de España, the centre of La Calzada de Oropesa, is home to the town hall, the Rollo de Justicia and a stone basin. Medieval Calzada retains an approximately 80-metre-long section of a paved road. The oldest section of the structure may date from the 14th or 15th century. According to local tradition, La Calzada was founded along the route of the Roman road connecting Emérita Augusta (Mérida), Caesaróbriga (Talavera de la Reina) and Toletum (Toledo).

Several houses showcase different aspects of architectural history. Casa de la Familia Huertas-Vega is a Modernist building: construction began at the end of the 19th century and was completed in 1912; some of the original furnishings have been preserved. Casa de la Hidalga is an example of traditional local manor-house architecture and features a distinctive portal made of dressed stone blocks. It also preserves a traditional olive press with a wooden screw and a stone for grinding olives. Casa de los Presbiteros was built in the 17th century to house the parish’s canons and priests.

Smaller historical details also tell the story of everyday life in the past: Pozairón recalls a public washhouse that had up to 40 stone washbasins with engraved names in the mid-20th century. The church’s main altarpiece is 17 metres high and includes paintings by the Baroque painter Claudio Coello. Casa de la Castilla dates from the 17th century; the Hospital de la Misericordia previously stood on its site.

Festivals and regional cuisine

At the VI edition of the Concurso de Vinos de Pitarra in 2023, all participants received free Cocido popular. At the 8Âş Concurso de Vinos de Pitarra, the wines entered in the competition were available to taste at public stands in the square. The accompanying programme is dated February 2025; the 8Âş Certamen de la Tapa also took place that same weekend. The programme for the XIII Matanza Tradicional in March 2025 included Migas with chocolate and Aguardiente. These examples offer a glimpse of specific festival programmes, not a permanently available food offering. Check the dates and programme for any future edition.

The Romería de la Virgen de Fátima takes place at the Eucaliptos grounds on the second Sunday in May; the exact schedule may vary. So if you would like to plan your stay around a festival, check the relevant date and programme. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your trip: the buildings and local history, the landscape or a specific festival.
