Lagartera combines a long-standing textile tradition with religious festivals and distinctive buildings. Those seeking traces of its cultural history can explore embroidery, traditional dress and the Museo Municipal Marcial Moreno Pascual; the Way of the Cross at El Calvario leads to another subject, shaped by the landscape.

Textile Art and History

Textile work has been documented since the 16th century; it may also have been practised in the Middle Ages. Lagartera is known for its rich tradition of handmade embroidery. Women were already producing embroidery for household linen and traditional dress in the 17th century. The “Labores de Lagartera”—traditional dress and other textile products—are protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of intangible cultural heritage; the designation dates from 31 October 2023. Traditional textile art is still displayed at certain family, religious or institutional celebrations.

The Museo Municipal Marcial Moreno Pascual

The Museo Municipal Marcial Moreno Pascual is housed in a farmhouse dating from the early 20th century. Its original structure has been preserved, with the exception of the upper floor. The ground-floor collection includes ceramics and copper items from the 16th to the 20th century. The first upper floor is devoted to a permanent exhibition of the costumbrista work of Marcial Moreno Pascual. “Costumbrista” describes an artistic style focused on customs and typical ways of life: this work therefore offers a different perspective on local culture from the ground-floor collection of ceramics and copper items.

Festivals Throughout the Year

For Corpus Christi, the monstrance is carried through the town, past decorated balconies and areas adorned with centuries-old textiles. Residents wear traditional dress from Lagartera. The festival is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest; specific details may vary from year to year.

The festival of the Santos Mártires is celebrated at the Ermita on 20 January. The Ermita de los Santos Mártires has a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave interior and an octagonal apse. The floor plan describes the overall shape, “single-nave” refers to an interior without additional naves, and “apse” is the section at the end of the building; its eight sides define its shape. For planning purposes, this means the fixed date of 20 January can be contrasted with the details of Corpus Christi, which vary from year to year.

Landscape and Historic Buildings

El Calvario

El Calvario is a natural area south of the municipality of Lagartera. The Way of the Cross begins on the edge of town and follows fourteen stone stations in a winding, uphill sequence to the top of the hill. During Lent, women from Lagartera traditionally climb to Calvario every day at different times to meditate and pray while “hacer las cruces” (making the Stations of the Cross). If you want to choose a focus, textile art offers a story stretching from historical records to particular festivals; El Calvario links the natural landscape with the Way of the Cross and Lenten traditions.

The History of the Bridge

In the 16th century, the Puente Grande replaced an earlier bridge with a larger structure. An inscription on the Puente Grande de Toledillo gives 1578 as the year it was built.
