Buenasbodas can be explored through its trails, architectural history and religious festival traditions. The official R-04 circular route passes through the town; the Church of San Blas and the Romería de la Garganta offer different points of interest. When planning your trip, it is worth first choosing your focus: would you like to follow a named route and take in its landscape, are you interested in church architecture, or would you like to plan around a local festival date? The advice for a hiking-focused trip therefore differs from that for a visit during a festival.
Routes, Landscape and Mills
The R-04 passes through Buenasbodas and is part of the trail network of the Talavera-Sierra de San Vicente-La Jara comarca. This network comprises 21 routes with more than 550 kilometres of signposted trails. Its scope may change as routes are added or removed. If you are planning to take the R-04, check the trail conditions before setting out.
Along the Sendero Molinos del Río Frío, you can see 10 mills from a former complex of 23 in total. These figures place the visible remains in the context of the larger historic mill complex: the trail also offers a way to learn about the history of this mill landscape. A chestnut ravine in Buenasbodas is considered a secluded natural spot and provides a distinct landscape focus alongside the named trail themes.
Other trail names also point to different connections. The trail from Gargantilla to Buenasbodas forms part of the Camino de Guadalupe de los Montes de Toledo. The PR-TO 57 also begins on the trail from Gargantilla to Buenasbodas. These details help you distinguish the routes by their names and connections.
San Blas: Church and Patron Saint Festival
The Church of San Blas is located at C. Iglesia 2 in Buenasbodas. The building dates from the 19th century; its whitewashed exterior is made of quartzite and slate. Other architectural features include a wooden hipped roof, a choir and a granite baptismal font. A hipped roof has sloping surfaces on the end walls as well. This allows the church’s date, exterior materials and roof style to be considered as distinct features rather than simply as a general description of a church.
A solemn Mass and a procession are part of the San Blas patron saint festival. A report from February 2023 also described the festival as including a gathering of the Leñeros, followed by the lighting of a bonfire. The programme at the time also included the popular second San Blas fun run. These reported details offer insight into the 2023 festival programme, not a future events calendar.
Romería de la Garganta
The Romería de la Garganta is part of the local celebrations in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. It takes place on the Saturday closest to 25 July. The procession starts at the Church of San Blas: participants accompany the Virgen del Carmen from there to the hermitage at Cuesta de los Castaños. Celebrations take place beside the hermitage. An account from July 2019 described the Romería as a tradition that had already been in existence for more than 40 years at that time.
Festival details described for participants include traditional lemonade and appetiser snacks at the sports centre. The Romería thus has a clearly identified procession route as well as its own festival venue and communal events. A regional account dated 20 July 2025 gives the Saturday closest to 25 July as the date rule. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the specific event date in advance.
Trails or a Festival Visit?
For planning purposes, the main difference between these themes is their point of focus: for a trip involving the R-04, the route and its condition take priority; for the Romería, the festival date, procession route and celebration venue are key. If you are more interested in architectural history, the Church of San Blas offers specific features ranging from its quartzite-and-slate exterior to its granite baptismal font. You can choose what to focus on based on whether you would like to centre your trip on a route, a building or a religious tradition.
