Quartzite cliffs south of the town, churches with different historical connections and a route to a waterfall offer several ways to explore Navahermosa. As you plan your visit, you can focus separately on culture, local traditions and the landscape.
Churches, Castle and History
The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel combines a long construction history with striking architectural details: construction began around 1563, based on plans by architect Hernán González. The church is defined by five domes, one of which is oval and lies above the crossing. It also has a Baroque organ dating from 1775. Visitors interested in sacred architecture will find several specific details that distinguish the building’s design and furnishings.
The Ermita de San Sebastián also has a clear historical connection. It stands at the entrance to Navahermosa on the old Camino de Toledo. It was first documented in 1576 and rebuilt in its present form in 1671. These dates mark different historical reference points: an early record and a later reconstruction. Castillo de Dos Hermanas adds to this view of the area’s history beyond the town: it lies about two kilometres east of Navahermosa, beside the Arroyo MerlĂn, and is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural).
Festivals and Local Traditions
The RomerĂa de la Milagra has been recognised as a regionally significant tourist festival; the distinction was awarded on 18 May 2016. The tradition includes decorated carts and riders on horseback accompanying the Virgin to the hermitage in the Valtravieso valley, surrounded by nature and mountains. The specific plans may vary from year to year. If the romerĂa is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.
For Corpus Christi, the streets are decorated with altars and carpets of thyme. These are laid out for the procession to pass through, carrying a 17th-century monstrance. For the Fiestas de San Bartolomé, the stated feast day falls on 24 August; the programme may change. The traditions therefore have different focuses: a procession and street decorations for Corpus Christi, and a separate festival celebration in August.
Landscape, Views and Trails
South of Navahermosa, mountain ridges with striking quartzite cliffs shape the landscape. Prominent scree slopes are also part of the scenery. From the El Cabezo viewpoint, the panorama stretches to the foothills of the Montes de Toledo and the valley of the Tagus. The highest peak in the municipality is 1,401 metres high; on a clear day, the view from there extends across the province of Toledo.
La Milagra is the starting point for many local routes. One option with a specified distance is the Ruta de la Hoz de Carboneros: it starts at the coto social of Navahermosa and is 14 kilometres long. The stated walking time is around four hours; terrain and conditions affect the actual duration. Check trail conditions locally before setting out. Along the route, the Carboneras waterfall drops in a curtain 10 to 15 metres high. The distance and walking time help you estimate how long this hike will take, while the waterfall is a specific landscape feature along the way.
Navahermosa’s natural heritage includes deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, partridges and birds of prey. The wildlife adds another dimension to the landscape without implying that you will necessarily encounter any particular species. If you are choosing the area mainly for its natural features, you can include the southern quartzite ridges and the route to the Hoz de Carboneros, as well as the viewpoints, in your travel plans.
Cuisine and Olive Oil
Traditional Navahermosa cuisine includes dishes made with game, partridge, quail and rabbit. Another local feature is the Cornicabra olive variety: it is grown in Navahermosa and used to produce olive oil associated with the protected designation of origin Montes de Toledo. Alongside churches and landscapes, regional cuisine and olive growing therefore offer further themes to consider when planning your trip.
To plan your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on churches and festival traditions or on the landscape and a longer hike. If you are planning the Ruta de la Hoz de Carboneros, allow for the stated walking time of around four hours and check conditions locally. If you are travelling for a festival, it is worth checking the relevant dates and programmes.
