Four connected lagoons, a parish church with links to Alcorlo and Sacedoncillo, and recurring cultural events give Azuqueca de Henares distinct highlights to explore. Nature watching, architectural history and events can each provide different reasons to visit.

Nature along the RĂo Henares

The Río Henares runs through the natural surroundings of Azuqueca de Henares; the Reserva Ornitológica de Azuqueca de Henares lies along its banks. Four interconnected lagoons cover a total area of 60,000 square metres. More than 140 bird species have been recorded in the reserve—a specific point of interest for travellers interested in birdlife. The number of recorded species may change as future surveys are carried out.

Admission is free, but visits must be arranged in advance. Groups can take guided tours lasting about two hours, for up to 25 people, Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Visits for individuals take place on the last Saturday of each month; advance booking is also required, and groups are limited to 25 people. Confirm dates and visit arrangements again before you travel.

Parque Urbano de la Quebradilla is an urban green space for outdoor activities. VĂa Verde del Henares offers a different focus: it connects Azuqueca de Henares with nearby places and provides suitable routes for cyclists and walkers. The two have different uses when planning your visit: Parque Urbano de la Quebradilla focuses on outdoor recreation, while VĂa Verde del Henares offers a route for cyclists and walkers. If you plan to use the VĂa Verde, check the trail conditions before travelling.

Churches and local history

The parish church of Santa Teresa de Jesús is in the Asfain neighbourhood in the north of Azuqueca de Henares. It was created by relocating and rebuilding the parish church of Alcorlo, which was submerged by a reservoir in 1978. Some elements from the church in Sacedoncillo were also incorporated; Sacedoncillo was a village that no longer exists. The building’s history therefore brings together two places in a single church.

The parish church of San Miguel is a Renaissance church with an elaborately sculpted portal. To explore the town’s development beyond its individual buildings, visit the Centro de Interpretación de la Historia y Cultura Local to learn about the municipality’s history over the centuries. The Ermita de la Soledad is also one of Azuqueca de Henares’s main sights.

Theatre, short films and a parade

The Muestra Nacional de Teatro Espiga de Oro takes place in November. Theatre performances are held on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month. Recurring events around the festival also include additional activities such as parades and exhibitions; these may vary from one edition to the next. If you are planning your trip around Espiga de Oro, check the programme and dates for that year.

The Desfile de Carrozas takes place every September and is an event of regional tourist interest. It passes through the municipality’s main streets, accompanied by festival groups, live music and ongoing entertainment. The exact route may change with each edition.

FESCIGU is an annual social short film festival held in October. Festival activities take place at the Auditorio Buero Vallejo and other cultural venues in Azuqueca de Henares; venues may vary from one edition to the next. The autumn calendar gives the dates of the three cultural events: September for the Desfile de Carrozas, October for FESCIGU and November for Espiga de Oro. Check the latest dates and programme details for your travel dates.
