Ablanque brings together an open valley crossed by the Ablanquejo River and several cultural and historical landmarks: the Ruta etnográfica 1: Los Chozones de Ablanque, a parish church of medieval origins, and the patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Espinar. The landscape, architectural history and local traditions give the town its many facets.

Valley and landscape

The Ablanquejo is a tributary of the Tagus. The area around Ablanque includes plateaus, juniper groves and pine forests characteristic of northeastern Guadalajara. The landscape therefore extends from the valley crossed by the river to the wider landforms of the surrounding area.

Traditional trails cross the valley and connect it with landscapes of ecological value. The river defines the valley, while the trails offer a different way to experience the surrounding landscapes. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

History from the Middle Ages to the modern era

Ablanque’s founding is associated with the resettlement of the Común de Villa y Tierra de Medinaceli, which began in the 12th century. Ablanque also belonged to the Señorío de Molina, a territory with its own Fueros from the 12th century onward. The century has different significance in these contexts: it marks the start of resettlement and the period from which the Fueros applied.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a parish church of medieval origins that was remodelled in the modern era. The municipality is also home to Celtiberian archaeological remains. The church and the remains point to different historical layers of the town.

Chozones and trails

The Ruta etnográfica 1: Los Chozones de Ablanque leads to three groups of Chozones that visitors can see. The Chozón Museo de Ablanque contains information about how Chozones were built and used. The focus differs: the route leads to the groups, while the museum explains their construction and use.

The Chozón Museo de Ablanque can be reached on foot, by bicycle or in a 4×4 vehicle. Check local road conditions beforehand. For the route, you should also check current trail conditions.

Mirador del Cerro

The ascent to the Mirador del Cerro is possible on foot, by bicycle or in a 4×4 vehicle. Conditions can change, so check local road conditions beforehand. The three options offer different ways of getting there without specifying a particular route or duration.

Pilgrimage and patron saint festivities

The Ermita de la Virgen del Espinar lies outside Ablanque and serves as a place for pilgrimages and traditional celebrations. Ablanque’s patron saint festivities are held in honour of the Virgen del Espinar and include a pilgrimage to her hermitage. If you want to plan your trip around these festivities, check the dates before making plans, as they can vary.
