Zorita De Los Canes offers two distinctly different ways to explore its history: the castle on the Tagus and the Visigothic city of Recópolis. There is also the Romanesque Church of San Juan Bautista and the opportunity to discover the river landscape as a place for recreation or hiking. For planning, it helps to make a simple distinction: would you like to explore architectural history, focus on an archaeological site, or spend time outdoors?
The castle and Romanesque architecture
The Castle of Zorita was built by Muslims to control a strategic point on the Tagus. Its present-day Gothic appearance was shaped by the master builders of the Order of Calatrava. The castle is notable both for its strategic importance and for the form that defines it today. Admission is charged; towers, walls, cisterns and a Romanesque chapel have been preserved. Check access arrangements before your trip.
The Romanesque Church of San Juan Bautista has also been preserved in Zorita De Los Canes. If you would like to compare different architectural styles, you can consider the church alongside the castle, which is Gothic in character. The comparison is especially tangible because the castle also preserves a Romanesque chapel.
Recópolis and the history of the Visigothic city
Recópolis draws attention to the history of the Visigothic city. King Leovigild commissioned the complex in 578 in honor of the future King Recaredo. The Archaeological Park includes the city’s archaeological sites and a visitor center. Recópolis is the oldest early medieval palace-basilica complex in Western Europe—a notable point of interest for travelers interested in early medieval architecture and urban history.
The site covers approximately 33 hectares. A large wall with square towers and several entrance gates surrounds it. The approximate area and enclosing wall draw attention beyond individual structures to the overall layout of the site. This distinguishes it from the castle: at Recópolis, the urban layout and palace-basilica complex take center stage, while the castle is defined by its strategic location and its present-day Gothic appearance.
Recreation and trails along the Tagus
The Tagus also offers another way to experience the area. Parque Fluvial del Tajo has recreational areas, green spaces, water activities and suitable spots for a picnic. Facilities and operating conditions may change, so check which services are currently available before your visit. The river park thus offers a distinct way to spend time outdoors.
For an active outing on a route, consider Stage 15 of the nature trails: it leaves Zorita De Los Canes, follows riverside paths along the Tagus toward Almoguera, and passes through the Sotos del río Tajo river reserve and the Sierra de Altomira SCI, SAC and SPA. Check trail conditions before setting out. This lets you distinguish between recreational areas and water activities in the river park, on the one hand, and a route through designated natural areas, on the other.
