Villaescusa De Haro offers two different ways to explore: historic architecture and nature. Historic highlights include the Capilla de la Asunción, the Dominican convent and the Palacio de los Ramírez. The municipality also includes a lagoon inhabited by numerous birds and a mountain range suitable for hiking and mountain biking. When choosing where to stay, it helps to decide in advance whether cultural history or nature should take centre stage.
The Capilla de la Asunción
The Capilla de la Asunción was commissioned in the early 16th century by Don Diego Ramírez de Villaescusa as a funerary chapel for his parents, relatives and heirs. Impressive praying statues stand beside the altar. Its funerary purpose gives the building a cultural and historical character that goes beyond its date: family remembrance and sacred architecture come together here.
The chapel is designed in the Gothic-Isabelline style. Its retablo, or altar structure, is dedicated to the Assumption and the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Its architecture, funerary purpose and Marian motifs offer different perspectives on the same building.
Architecture, Founding and Concept
The Palacio de los Ramírez dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. The parish church of San Pedro is a 16th-century hall church. The Colegio o Universidad non nata was conceived as the first university in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The story thus ranges from specific construction periods and a church type to the idea of a planned university. History enthusiasts can use these differences as a guiding thread: a century dates a building, a hall church describes a type of space, and the concept behind the Colegio points to an educational ambition. In a hall church, the nave and aisles are almost the same height.
The Dominican convent was founded in 1542 by Don Sebastián Ramírez de Arellano. It is important to note the access conditions when planning a visit: the exterior is freely accessible, but the interior generally cannot be visited. Check locally for current access conditions before your visit.
Lagoon and Mountain Range
The municipality includes a lagoon inhabited by numerous birds. A mountain range within the municipality is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. The lagoon draws attention to birdlife, while the mountain range is ideal for active pursuits on foot or by mountain bike.
This distinction is useful when planning your trip: you can focus on birdlife as a nature theme, or prioritise hiking and mountain biking as active pursuits. This makes it easier to decide which focus within the nature theme best suits your stay.
