Palomares del Campo brings together architectural and artistic history, festival traditions and a landscape shaped by agricultural fields. The celebrations in April and September offer clear reference points when choosing when to visit. The church, townscape and rural paths also offer different perspectives on the town.

Church, Art and Townscape

Construction of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción began in 1553 under master stonemason Cristóbal de Oñate. The façade was completed in 1638 and designed by Francisco de Anchea. The church also houses notable works of sculpture, painting and architecture from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The period represented by these works thus extends beyond the completion of the façade and into the 18th century.

The townscape also includes traditional masonry houses with simple façades, typical of the Alcarria. The church and homes represent different scales of architectural history: the former, works spanning several centuries; the latter, the understated regional house style. Together, they give the town both a sacred and a distinctly rural architectural character.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The festival in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza has been celebrated since 1614 on the last Sunday in April. Dancers, Gitanillas and Tunos perform, and Paloteo dances are also presented. The April date and dance traditions give this festival a clear place in Palomares del Campo’s annual calendar.

Another festival is dedicated to the Santo Cristo de la Paz and takes place on the last weekend in September. The two festival periods are well spaced apart and offer different reference points for planning a trip. The programme for the patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza, from 25 to 28 April 2026, included a bonfire at the hermitage at 11 pm. For future years, it is worth checking the relevant programme, as the annual celebrations may vary.

Mining and Rural Paths

The HPC 5 mining complex comprises more than 150 shafts or mines. Alongside church architecture and festival traditions, mining history therefore emerges as a distinct focus. The different themes—sacred art, traditional celebrations and mining—offer varied ways to explore the town’s history.

Palomares del Campo lies in the Alcarria conquense, a landscape of gentle hills and dry-farmed fields. Rural paths in the municipality are suitable for easy hikes and walks among cultivated fields. There is also a ford in the landscape around Fuente del Pez. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors as well as exploring culture will find a different focus here from the church art and architectural history.

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to consider whether you want to plan your trip around a festival date or focus more on culture and the rural surroundings. For a festival visit, April or September are the obvious reference points; otherwise, the church, townscape, mining history and walking paths may guide your choice. This lets you choose your reason for travelling according to your interests without reducing Palomares del Campo to a single theme.
