Huete brings together architectural history, museums covering a range of subjects, and a walking route through the Vega del BorbotĂłn. The Cuevas de Sanabrio in Saceda del RĂo (Huete) are another special discovery: tours there take visitors into Roman galleries. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between historic buildings, exhibitions, and activities with changing schedules.

Monasteries, towers and traces of the past

The Monasterio de la Merced dates back to the 13th century; the complex visible today was built mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries. This Baroque complex has two cloisters from different construction periods. It brings together a long history of development and several building phases. The Torre del Reloj adds another architectural highlight: the tower seen today was designed by Fernando LĂłpez, an architect from Cuenca. Its design combines academic elements with the concave-convex structure of the Late Baroque.

Other buildings lead to different chapters in the town’s history. Today, only the church remains of the former Monasterio de Santo Domingo de Guzmán. An underground Gothic street runs beneath the remains of the Iglesia de San Pedro. The Castillo de Luna is an old alcazaba built on Roman fortifications. Sections of the town walls survive; construction began during the Andalusi period. These places differ both in their architectural forms and in the periods with which they are associated.

Museums covering different subjects

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Florencio de la Fuente displays paintings, sculptures and graphic works by leading contemporary Spanish artists. One focus is on artists associated with the avant-garde and the artistic renewal of the 20th century. The museum’s program includes temporary exhibitions, cultural activities and educational offerings; individual events and exhibitions may change.

At the Museo de la Fotografía – Fundación Antonio Pérez, temporary exhibitions are complemented by educational offerings, audiovisual screenings and meetings with artists. The Museo Etnográfico de Huete in the historic town center offers a very different perspective: its collection explores agriculture, livestock farming, traditional crafts and domestic life. You can choose based on whether you are more interested in contemporary art, photography, or everyday life and work.

The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn de las Fiestas de San Juan Evangelista displays artifacts and explains the origins, development and significance of the cultural heritage associated with the festivities. It is located in the former galleries of a church in Huete. This focus complements the history of art and everyday life with the traditions of a local festival.

Tours and a walk through the Vega

Huete’s historic center is open to visitors free of charge. The Ayuntamiento offers guided tours of the town’s main sights. Check the latest information about access and tour times before your visit. Guided tours are also offered at the Cuevas de Sanabrio: visitors can enter the ancient Roman galleries and learn how the crystal was mined. The site is considered a representative Roman mine for lapis specularis. Check tour times in advance.

The Paseo por la Vega del Borbotón offers a change of scenery. The route passes family gardens in the valley of the Borbotón. Traditionally, these gardens supplied Huete with fruit and vegetables. If you want to combine buildings and museums with time outdoors, this offers a different focus while keeping the area’s cultural history in view. The apse area of Nuestra Señora de Atienza is also now used for concerts and other cultural activities.
