The cluse in the Hoz de Jabalera is considered one of the finest examples of a cluse in Castilla-La Mancha. Together with the parish church of Santa María la Mayor and a 6.7-kilometre circular route, it provides a clear framework for understanding Jabalera as a travel destination. The Jabalera anticline lies in the Hoz, about two kilometres from the town. The church and the Rollo de Justicia highlight architectural history and civic heritage. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Jabalera, you can decide whether you would like to focus your stay mainly on the landscape, architecture or a circular walk.

Rock formations in the Hoz de Jabalera

The Jabalera anticline is an eroded anticline: erosion has worn away its central part, exposing older layers. The folded rock is made of limestone. The anticline, formed of folded limestone, shows how erosion has worn away its centre and exposed older layers.

The landscape also gives Jabalera a distinctive setting: it is characterised by the most rugged and intricate landforms in the entire comarca. The Sierra de Altomira forms the scenic backdrop. The cluse in the Hoz de Jabalera is considered one of the finest examples of its kind in Castilla-La Mancha; the anticline of folded limestone has a centre worn away by erosion, where older layers are exposed.

Church and Rollo de Justicia

The parish church of Santa María la Mayor was built in the 15th century and augmented with significant architectural features in the 16th and 17th centuries. On its south side is a porch with depressed arches. These rest on columns with round shafts and Doric capitals. The exterior architecture can therefore be appreciated through clearly identified forms, rather than viewing the church only in terms of its long construction history.

Specific features of the interior are also described: Santa María la Mayor has three naves. The central nave is covered by a lunette vault; the central vault contains a quatrefoil medallion made of red jasper. The three-nave church interior is further distinguished by a quatrefoil medallion of red jasper in the central vault.

The Rollo de Justicia stands in the square opposite the church. It rests on a square base with three steps and is topped by a metal cross. Its rarity in the region makes it a civic feature of considerable interest. The church and the Rollo represent two distinct aspects of the local heritage: sacred architecture with its various construction phases, and a rare civic feature with a clearly described structure.

Access to the gorge and circular route

The cluse can be reached from Jabalera via a 1.5-kilometre track heading west to the gorge. There is some danger when approaching the edges of the gorge to view the cluse. The track runs alongside an old quarry and the ruins of a mill. Check local conditions before visiting.

The circular route “Contrastes alcarreños en la Sierra de Altomira” is a separate excursion: it is 6.7 kilometres long and starts and ends in Jabalera’s square. The route enters the Sierra de Altomira Natura 2000 protected area, designated as a ZEC and ZEPA. This protected area covers more than 20 percent of the municipality. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The two distances therefore refer to different outings: 1.5 kilometres is the distance given for the track to the gorge, while 6.7 kilometres is the length of the entire circular route, starting and ending in the square. This distinction helps with planning without confusing the track to the gorge with the circular route.
