As a destination, Campillo de Altobuey brings together two different scales: the Camino de la Lana includes a stage from Villarta to Campillo de Altobuey, while historic churches, chapels and the museum offer distinct cultural themes. The Pinar de San Isidro also features, designated by the municipality as an area of natural and scenic interest. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth choosing your focus first: a long hiking stage, architecture and art, or a trip combining culture with the regional landscape.

Architecture, collections and local traditions

The Santuario de la Virgen de la Loma is a protected Bien de Interés Cultural monument dating from the 17th and 18th centuries; it was built as a hospice for pilgrims and people in need. Its Baroque interior has a single-nave Latin cross plan and four side chapels. This building thus brings together church architecture and its former social function as a hospice—two points of interest for anyone wishing to learn more about the history of religious architecture.

The Ermita de la Trinidad, also known as Padre Eterno, dates from the late 16th century. Its Renaissance coffered ceiling features paintings by Hernando de Mayorga. In contrast with the Santuario, the focus here is on the ornate ceiling and its named artist, while the Santuario combines a Baroque floor plan with its former hospice function. The Ermita del Cristo offers a different emphasis: this simple Baroque chapel is known for its portal and interior altar.

Next to the Ermita del Cristo, the former hospital now houses the Casa de Cultura. If you plan to visit, check locally whether access is possible and under what conditions. The parish church of San Andrés also has its own architectural character: it features rich wall paintings and a slender tower.

The Museo histĂłrico y etnolĂłgico de Campillo de Altobuey is divided into five themed halls. They cover past life in the surrounding area, traditions, and the artistic, cultural and natural heritage. The collections on display include remains from the Iberian archaeological site of Santa Quiteria and Roman funerary steles. If you plan to visit the museum, check its opening arrangements separately.

Consider the Camino and landscape separately

The Camino de la Lana includes stage ES13a-10a from Villarta to Campillo de Altobuey; it is 29.810 kilometres long. If you plan this section, treat it as a separate hiking component alongside the cultural programme, not as a short transfer between attractions. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting off. This stage is therefore a specific item to plan for as part of your trip.

For a landscape perspective, the Pinar de San Isidro is a distinct point of interest: the municipality designates it as an area of natural and scenic interest. Campillo de Altobuey is part of La Manchuela. The region’s landscape is shaped by rolling terrain, cultivated fields, vineyards and small streams; the streams flow towards the valley of the Río Cabriel. This regional context complements the themes of architecture and collections with a view of the La Manchuela landscape.

Local traditions and finding accommodation

The celebration of San Antón includes a procession in which musicians walk through the streets accompanying the saint. The dulzaina is called “Pita” in Campillo and is accompanied by a drum; a clarinet is currently used in its place. Resoli is also part of the area’s historic culinary traditions: the Augustinians of Campillo made several varieties of the liqueur at the hospice for medicinal and social occasions.

Is your focus the hiking stage, or rather architecture, the museum and regional culture?
