For Covalanas, you should plan for two separate time requirements: a 650-metre uphill path leads from the car park to the cave. According to current official visitor information, the guided tour itself takes approximately 45 minutes; this may change if operating arrangements change. The R2 Valle del Silencio circular route passes through La Pared after Cueva de Covalanas. At 18 kilometres, with 816 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of six to seven hours, it requires different time planning from a cave visit.

Cave Art and Visitor Routes

Covalanas is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Palaeolithic paintings depict 18 female deer, a stag, an aurochs and a horse. The guided tour lets you visit the cave within a manageable time frame; include the uphill path from the car park as a separate part of your planning.

Cullalvera also has a distinctive visitor route: inside, a 400-metre walkway has been adapted for people with reduced mobility. However, the prehistoric cave paintings at Cullalvera are outside the visitor route and cannot be visited. This restriction is important to bear in mind if you want to see the paintings themselves. Check the current official information about the caves before your visit.

A footpath from Ramales passes Cueva de la Haza and then climbs via switchbacks to the higher-lying Cueva de Covalanas, at an elevation of 300 m. This means the route from Ramales and the path from the cave car park differ in their stated starting points and routes.

Hiking Routes with Different Time Requirements

The R2 Valle del Silencio is described as an 18-kilometre circular route with 816 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of six to seven hours. On Monte del Pando, one section follows a narrow path through a Cantabrian holm oak forest. This provides a specific picture of the route as well as its distance and elevation figures. The duration is an estimate; local trail conditions may change.

The route to the caves of Ramales offers a shorter time estimate: it is four kilometres long, takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes, and includes 220 metres of ascent and descent. Compared with the R2, both the stated distance and estimated duration are considerably shorter. These figures help you compare the two hikes by time and elevation, without equating distance with difficulty.

Historic Trails and Geological Sites

The Camino de las cuevas de Ramales follows the old Camino Real from Laredo to Burgos. Its route is associated with the journey of Charles V during his retreat to Yuste. The Ruta de las Cuevas passes through the area known as Valle del Silencio, providing another named trail reference for your planning.

Pared del Eco is listed as a site of geological interest (Lugar de Interés Geológico) in the Valles de Cantabria Geopark project. In addition to Pared del Eco, the large entrance to Cuevamur is accessible. The description of this entrance is a specific reference point if you are planning to include both places; check current access and trail conditions before setting out.

Trails from La Pared

A pleasant path runs alongside the RĂo Calera. From there, you can view Cueva de la Luz, an impressive cave in a sheer limestone wall on Monte del Pando.

The Senda de la Dama Roja follows a different route: after descending through a forest, it heads towards the RĂo Calera basin and follows a track closer to La Pared. It is not described as a circular route. When choosing your hike, you can therefore distinguish between the riverside route with views of Cueva de la Luz and this descent towards La Pared. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
