Parbayón brings together a municipal bike park, historic landmarks and a landscape shaped by meadows and streams. This offers three distinct perspectives for planning a trip: cycling, local cultural heritage and nature. Its location 12 km from Santander helps put the town on the map; each topic has a different focus.

Location and orientation

Parbayón is 12 km from Santander and at kilometre marker 140 on the N-632 between Santander and Burgos. The distance from Santander and the kilometre marker on the N-632 answer two different questions about orientation: how far the town is from Santander and where it is located along the route between Santander and Burgos.

Bike park and play areas

The municipal bike park in Parbayón can be used for mountain biking and BMX. It covers 800 square metres and includes two opposing banked turns, two 180-degree turns and four jump lines. It was inaugurated on 7 August 2026. The facility combines turns and jump lines; cycling enthusiasts can consider the park a specific highlight alongside the cultural and landscape attractions.

The redesigned play area includes an outdoor space and a covered area with refurbished play equipment and a large zip line. There is also a covered children’s playground near the Consultorio de Parbayón. If you want to include play facilities in your plans, you can consider these as two separate locations: one combines an outdoor space with a covered section, while the other is a covered children’s playground near the Consultorio.

Culture and historic traces

A route through Parbayón highlights several well-preserved washhouses. It also includes the historic RENFE tunnel, the Church of Nuestra Señora de Cianca y San Lorenzo and the Ermita de San Francisco de Asís. Natural highlights along the route include the riverside ecosystem and the Parbayón stream; it passes through landscapes of plains and streams. Built and cultural heritage thus sits alongside waterways and riverside scenery—distinct topics that you can weigh separately or together when planning your trip.

Historically, a branch of the Roman Via Agrippa ran through Cianea, Parbayón, Renedo, Vioño and Zurita to Barreda. This historic route extends the cultural themes with a perspective that reaches beyond the town itself.

Meadows, geology and streams

Permanently green meadows stretch across the Vega and the less sloping areas of Parbayón. Another distinctive feature is the Parbayón diapir, clearly visible at the former gypsum mining site. A geological structure and traces of past gypsum extraction can be seen side by side: the landscape can be understood not only through its open meadows, but also through its geological and industrial history.

The streams also offer different points of reference. The local Carrimont stream rises in Parbayón and shortly afterwards flows into the Pas near Renedo. The La Mina stream, also known as Parbayón according to P. Madoz, flows into the Ría de Solía. This gives you two distinct waterways to consider: Carrimont flows through Renedo into the Pas, while La Mina drains into the Ría de Solía.
