Punta del Hidalgo lies on a rocky coast that is part of the Macizo de Anaga Biosphere Reserve. Volcanic activity shaped a low-lying landscape here, with an extensive, biologically valuable intertidal zone. Coastal paths, seawater bathing areas and the history of fishing offer different ways to enjoy a stay by the sea.

Intertidal Zone and Bathing Areas

The Las Furnias tide pools are easy to access and offer the chance to observe various marine species. Those interested in the natural environment will also find birdwatching hides, which provide information about native and migratory bird species as well as seating for observation.

The Piscina Natural de la Punta, also known as del Arenisco, is a seawater bathing area with lifeguard supervision, showers and access adapted for people with reduced mobility. The El Arenisco natural swimming pool has been awarded the Blue Flag and is open free of charge year-round. It combines a dedicated bathing area with features that are useful both for planning a day of swimming and for observing the coastal landscape.

Coastal Paths and Surfing

The Sendero Litoral de La Punta del Hidalgo is 2,300 metres long, takes about 45 minutes and is rated easy. It begins at Playa del Roquete, beside the Cofradía de Pescadores de Ntra. Sra. de la Consolación de la Punta del Hidalgo, and passes the Faro and Charco La Arena before reaching the Ermita de San Juanito. Its distance, approximate duration and difficulty provide a clear basis for planning your time.

The PR-TF 10 offers a different experience: the hiking trail leads to Roque de Los Dos Hermanos, which affords panoramic views of the Anaga coast. It then descends towards Punta del Hidalgo. The routes therefore differ in their points of reference: the Sendero Litoral has a stated distance and duration, while the PR-TF 10 focuses on the viewpoint and the descent that follows.

El Roquete is a surf spot with left-breaking waves and a pebble seabed. Conditions are considered optimal at low and mid tide; the technical difficulty is intermediate. As surf conditions vary, check the current tide and surf conditions before your visit.

Maritime Architecture and Local History

The Faro de Punta del Hidalgo is a landmark of the coastal area thanks to its modern architecture. It was completed in 1992 and began operating two years later. Another architectural point of interest in the area is the Casa-torre de Punta del Hidalgo, a replica of the well-known Torre del Conde de La Gomera.

The Centro de Interpretación del Mar y la Pesca de Tenerife has a permanent exhibition about artisanal fishing in Tenerife and the local natural heritage. The Capilla de La Virgen del Carmen de La Hoya adds a religious dimension to these themes: it was built in 1925 in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. Before the conquest, Punta del Hidalgo was a lordship independent of the other Menceyatos. It was ruled by Aguahuco, son of Mencey Tinerfe; Aguahuco's son Zebenzuí later inherited the territory.

Local Cuisine and Festivities

The Cofradía de Pescadores has a restaurant where you can sample fresh, locally sourced produce. In September, Punta del Hidalgo holds its patron saint festivities in honour of San Mateo Apóstol. The programme includes religious and popular events, including the Cabalgata del Haragán, during which a cloth puppet filled with firecrackers is burned. If you would like to plan your visit around the festivities, check the event dates before travelling.

For local information, the Oficina de Información Turística de Punta del Hidalgo is located on Carretera General Punta del Hidalgo, opposite Mirador San Mateo.
