Guamansa can be explored through two themes: a rural history in which agriculture and livestock farming have played a role since pre-Hispanic times, and the religious heritage surrounding Santa Rosa de Lima. There are also specific trails and festivals throughout the year. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on the landscape and outdoor activities or on local history and festival traditions.

Rural History and Trails

The rural history of San CristĂłbal de La Laguna also includes Guamansa. Agricultural and livestock-farming traditions have shaped the area since pre-Hispanic times. Agricultural products include wheat, lupins, fruit trees, potatoes and vegetables. For visitors who want to learn about a place through its rural development, this background offers a different perspective from its church and festivals.

La Laguna Ecotours is a collection of self-guided routes; it includes a guide from El Ortigal to Guamansa. The El Ortigal–Guamansa route is 5.92 km long and suitable for bicycles. However, caution is advised in areas with heavy traffic. The Paseo de Las Acacias, a notable place in Guamansa near Bajada del Boquerón, offers a different kind of route: for much of its length, the paved footpath runs alongside traffic. For planning purposes, different features stand out: the route’s length and suitability for bicycles, and the Paseo’s paved surface and traffic conditions. As the path surface and traffic conditions may change, check the state of the Paseo before your visit.

Santa Rosa de Lima: Church and Local History

The church of Santa Rosa de Lima in Guamansa is dedicated to the first woman born on the American continent to be beatified. The local history also includes the former chapel of Santa Rosa de Lima, which was funded by local residents and still stands today. The present-day church is designed in a striking Neo-Gothic style and is the work of Mariano Estanga. In 1929, the chapel of Santa Rosa de Lima was elevated to parish church status by the Diocese of Nivariense. Its dedication, the surviving former chapel and the present-day Neo-Gothic church offer different points of interest for a visit.

La Lucha Canaria, the Canarian folk sport, is also part of the cultural traditions in the Guamansa area.

Festivals Throughout the Year

In June, Guamansa holds a romerĂa in honour of San Isidro Labrador, giving thanks for the harvest. Another romerĂa in honour of Santa Rosa de Lima takes place in September. August 30 is the most important day of the celebrations in honour of Santa Rosa de Lima in Guamansa. The date information differs: the two romerĂas are associated with particular months, while August 30 is identified as the most important day of the Santa Rosa celebrations. If a festival date is to determine your travel dates, check the dates for your intended travel year before booking.
