Bosque del Adelantado is a remnant of laurel forest near the historic centre of La Esperanza. It covers 25,397 mÂČ and links a natural feature of the town with its history: following the conquest of the islands, deforestation and livestock farming shaped El Rosario. The forest survived this development because of its location in a ravine. Those interested in landscapes and historical context will find both closely connected here.
Hiking trails with different characteristics
The section of the GR 131 Anaga - Chasna from La Esperanza to Ărea Recreativa La Caldera is a 29.8-kilometre linear hiking trail. It passes through Bosque del Adelantado and touches on the protected areas Paisaje Protegido de Las Lagunetas and Parque Natural de la Corona Forestal. Its length and defined endpoints give this section a different profile from Sendero de La Pintora, which connects the outlying neighbourhoods with the centre of La Esperanza. The two trails therefore represent different kinds of connection: a long linear route on the one hand, and a link between neighbourhoods and the centre on the other. Check the latest technical route information before setting out; trail conditions can change.
Another kind of outdoor experience
Forestal Park Tenerife is set among Canary Island pine trees in the protected landscape area of Paisaje Protegido de Las Lagunetas, on Monte de La Esperanza. It features more than 90 games suspended among the treetops, as well as seven treetop courses with large zip lines. This is quite different from the hiking trails described: the park focuses on games and treetop courses, while Sendero de La Pintora links neighbourhoods with the centre and the GR 131 section forms a long linear route. Those weighing up different nature and activity options for a stay can therefore consider them as distinct choices rather than treating them as equivalent trails.
Church, art and a story behind the name
Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. de La Esperanza is a Neocolonial-style church and is classified as a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural (BIC). Its interior includes a Baroque image of Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores and a depiction of San Juan dating from the 17th century. The architecture, heritage classification and two works of art mentioned here provide specific reference points for the townâs cultural profile. The townâs name is also linked to a story: some sources attribute it to the Adelantado Alonso FernĂĄndez de Lugo having spotted the camp at Añaza from this place while fleeing the Matanza de Acentejo. This explanation is explicitly presented as an interpretation attributed to only some sources.
Festivals and gastronomy
Festival traditions are another cultural point of interest in La Esperanza. Gastronomy is part of the public celebration at the traditional, recurring Baile de Magos âLa Manta Esperanceraâ. The RomerĂa de La Esperanza celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2026. This refers to the anniversary, not the number of an edition. Together with the church and works of art, these festivals show another side of the town: alongside trails and landscapes, community celebrations and gastronomy are distinct themes to consider when planning a trip.
