Garachico can be explored from several perspectives: its protected cultural heritage, cultural activities, natural swimming pools and volcanic landscapes each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding in advance whether you are especially interested in historic buildings, cultural activities, or nature and the coast. This will help you shape your trip around the things that matter to you.

Historic Ensemble and Protected Buildings

The town and harbour of Garachico are protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of a historic ensemble. The historic centre preserves old buildings, monasteries and mansions from the town’s illustrious past. In addition to this ensemble, individual buildings also have their own protected status: the Iglesia de Santa Ana is listed as a historic monument.

Behind the Iglesia de Santa Ana is the Museo de Arte Sacro. Its collection includes works from the 17th century. The Castillo-Fortaleza de San Miguel dates back to 1575. Together, these different buildings and collections offer several ways to explore the town’s history—from the protected ensemble to individual monuments and the museum’s historic works.

Cultural Programme and Events

ÁREA GARACHICO has established its own programme of cultural activities in Garachico. It includes cinema, dance, classical theatre, visual arts and music. Specific activities may vary; if a particular offering is important to your trip, check the current programme in advance.

Another option is the theatrical route through the historic and artistic centre of the town and harbour of Garachico. Nine actors bring historical episodes to life. Check whether the route is currently available before your trip. The Fiesta de las Tradiciones y Romería de San Roque dates back to the beginning of the 17th century.

Every summer in July, the Feria de Artesanía takes place in Garachico. Traditional handicrafts from the Canary Islands are displayed and sold there. Visitors can also sample Canarian dishes, regional wines and traditional baked goods; individual offerings may vary. Since the exact event dates can change, it is worth checking the schedule if you would like to plan your trip around the fair.

Volcanic Landscapes and Seabirds

The Reserva Natural Especial del Chinyero features young lava flows that are still at an early stage of colonisation and plant succession. The Paisaje Protegido de Los Acantilados de La Culata is a fossil sea cliff with geological, geomorphological and scenic value. Together, these two descriptions offer different perspectives on volcanic landscapes: early vegetation development on lava and the distinctive features of a fossil cliff.

Roque de Garachico is home to threatened and migratory seabirds, including the little shearwater, Bulwer’s petrel and Madeira storm petrel. To protect the colonies, Roque is closed to visitors. Bear this restriction in mind when planning your trip: the protected birdlife is the main natural feature here, but Roque itself is not a visitor destination.

Coast and Hiking Trail

Piscinas Naturales El Caletón consists of several natural swimming pools, including Las Viejas, Los Niños and Los Chorros, as well as a seafront promenade. The names of the individual pools help you identify the different parts of the complex; bathing conditions may vary. If swimming is a key part of your plans, check the conditions before your visit.

The PR-TF 43 Garachico–Montaña Chinyero hiking trail runs from Garachico via the Camino de El Lance, across volcanic lava flows, to San Juan del Reparo. Check the trail conditions before setting out. Garachico offers a range of different experiences: protected history, a seasonal craft fair, natural swimming pools and a clearly described hiking route.
