El Médano is ideal for a trip where beaches, water sports and volcanic landscapes are the main attractions. From Playa de El Médano, you can see Montaña Roja; the beach sections differ in their sand, wave conditions and sporting activities. Paths, protected landscapes and local festival traditions also offer different ways to shape your stay.
Beaches and coastal areas
Playa de El Médano has fine grey sand and offers views of the volcanic cone of Montaña Roja. The beach section closest to the town is considered more family-friendly and has gentler waves. By contrast, the section farthest from town is suitable for windsurfing and kitesurfing. At Playa Chica, calm water and golden sand define the beach; next to it is El Médano’s small fishing pier. Playa de La Tejita is more than a kilometre long and lies beside Montaña Roja. This means you can find different conditions along the coast, from the calmer waters of Playa Chica to sections suited to water sports.
Volcanoes and protected landscapes
The volcanic cone of Montaña Roja is 171 metres high and was formed by a coastal eruption. The area covers 166 hectares and includes areas of inorganic sand and wetlands. Protected birds such as the Kentish plover can be observed there. Playa de La Tejita lies directly beside the volcanic cone, bringing together two distinctive features of the coastal landscape. To reach Montaña Roja, take the TF-64 towards El Médano, then continue along the TF-643. Road and parking conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Another natural attraction is the Montaña Pelada Natural Monument. The volcanic cone was formed by an underwater eruption; the landscape also includes psammophilous vegetation adapted to sandy soils and a fossil dune. From El Médano, the area can be reached via Avenida Juan Carlos I. After parking at the end of the road, continue on foot into the protected area. As access conditions may change, check them before your visit.
Trails and water sports
The former Muelle-embarcadero de El Médano is now a footpath connecting Playa Chica, Paseo del Picacho and Avenida José Miguel Galván Bello. Alongside the beaches, it provides a useful landmark for finding your way around the town.
Playa El Cabezo in El Médano, Granadilla de Abona, is suitable for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It also hosts several international windsurfing and kitesurfing competitions, including the world championship. Competition dates may vary. Wind Center Playa Surf is a water sports school in El Médano offering lessons and equipment rental for windsurfing, kitesurfing, wingfoiling and surfing. Culture and local traditions
The Hermano Pedro pilgrimage route leads from Vilaflor through the municipalities of San Miguel de Abona and Granadilla de Abona to the coast at El Médano. In El Médano itself, the Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro is a sanctuary dedicated to Pedro de San José Betancur. The GUÍA de ESCULTURAS EL MÉDANO presents sculptures made of stone, wood and steel that are accessible to the public. The individual works and the route description may change.
The Romería Barquera takes place in late September as part of the local festivities. During the procession, the image of the Virgin is carried from the church in El Médano along the town’s main street to the central beach, then taken by boat around the bay. Details of the proceedings may vary from year to year. This festival tradition adds a distinct cultural dimension to trip planning alongside the area’s natural attractions and water sports.
