Cultural History and Traditions

The Museo de Historia de Granadilla de Abona is located in the historic centre, in a traditional Canarian house dating from the late 19th century. Its chronologically arranged collections trace the customs, activities and history of the municipality, from the time of the Guanches to the present day. The museum has eleven rooms; one of them displays reconstructions of various Indigenous burial practices and grave goods.

The Secadero de Tabaco also tells the story of the region. It was built in 1878 by José García Torres, one of the most prominent tobacco growers in the Comarca Abona. Tobacco cultivation developed as an alternative during the crisis in cochineal production. A decree of the Government of the Canary Islands dated 15 July 2008 protected the Secadero as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Sitio Etnológico.

Those interested in architecture will find the Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua, a single-nave building with a Latin cross floor plan. Its Mudéjar coffered ceiling, in the rafter-and-knot style, is decorated with geometric patterns. The Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro is a shrine dedicated to the saint; alongside a wooden sculpture of Santo Hermano Pedro, visitors will find offerings and prayers left by the faithful. The Caserío sobre La Fuente is a heritage complex of ethnographic significance within the municipality, east of the town centre.

Las Vegas retains the character of a traditional Canarian hamlet. After the conquest of Tenerife, the first settlement of colonisation in the Comarca Abona was established there. A living tradition is the Danza de Varas de Las Vegas: it is performed every year on 26 July by seven dancers carrying palm sticks wrapped in colourful fabric, and is described as unique in the Canary Archipelago. If you plan your trip around this date, check the festival programme in advance. The Danza de Varas de Chimiche is said to be the only dance form in the archipelago to use decorated sticks.

Volcanic Landscapes and Hiking Trails

Los Escurriales, also known as Paisaje Lunar, features white mounds of volcanic pumice within a forest. These formations have been shaped by wind and water erosion. The Los Derriscaderos Natural Monument encompasses a 268-hectare geological landscape with light-coloured volcanic reliefs formed by erosion. The Montañas de Ifara y Los Riscos consist of two well-preserved volcanic cones. Several bird species can be spotted there; the area is also home to a longhorn beetle endemic to the area.

The hiking trails vary in route and landscape. The 7.8-kilometre linear PR-TF 83 Altos de Granadilla runs from Cruz de Tea via a branch of the former Camino Real de Chasna to Los Escurriales. The PR-TF 83.1 starts in the hamlet of Las Vegas, passes through farmland and pine forest, and follows a lava flow towards Risco del Muerto. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The historic Camino Real del Sur between Granadilla and San Miguel is still accessible; the starting point is at Plaza González Mena in Granadilla de Abona.

Coast, Beaches and Water Sports

La Tejita is a long natural beach with clean water and a largely unspoilt setting beside Montaña Roja. El Médano has golden sand, and the water there is usually calm and clear. Fishing, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, bodyboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and diving are possible along the coast of Granadilla de Abona. Conditions and operators may vary. Near Los Abrigos, lava formations have created small natural pools where you can enjoy a calm swim; bathing conditions may vary.
