Genovés combines a protected coastal landscape with a local history reflected in its churches and festival traditions. Part of the area lies within the Paisaje Protegido de Los Acantilados de La Culata. At the same time, the Parroquia de La Candelaria and the Ermita de Fátima tell of religious needs and the development of community life.
Between the Cliffs and the North Coast
The Paisaje Protegido de Los Acantilados de La Culata covers part of the Genovés area. It is a fossil sea cliff. Various geomorphological processes have produced features there including hanging ravines and historic lava flows from the Volcán de Trevejos on the flank of Garachico. The fossil cliff points to an earlier coastline; the ravines and lava also tell of other geological processes.
The cliffs provide undisturbed refuge for pelagic seabirds and birds of prey. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by its geological formations but is also important as a habitat. The Mirador El Genovés is in the village of Genovés and offers a panorama of Tenerife’s north coast. Distinctive landforms and views of the coast are thus different aspects of the surrounding area.
The TF-82 is also relevant for finding your way to the protected landscape: it is one of the main access routes to the protected area and runs alongside the built-up area of Genovés. Road conditions can change; check them before setting out if you plan to use this route.
Churches and Local History
The Parroquia de La Candelaria was solemnly consecrated on February 2, 1966, under the patronage of Our Lady of Candelaria. It was later separated from San Juan del Reparo to become an independent parish. Its history thus links a precisely dated religious event with a later change to the parish structure.
After the Ermita de Fátima became too small for the large number of worshippers attending religious and popular celebrations, a larger church was planned. The chapel’s origins were also tied to a specific need: the residents of Genovés wanted it so they would no longer have to go to San Juan del Reparo for their most urgent spiritual needs. The Ermita de Fátima was consecrated and dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima.
These details show different aspects of local church history: the desire for spiritual care close to home and the later plan for a larger church in response to the many people attending celebrations. This history involves both the places named and their respective roles: the Parroquia de La Candelaria became an independent parish; the Ermita de Fátima features in the story of the journeys that people previously had to make to San Juan del Reparo.
Festivals and a Stage of the Camino Real del Norte
The festival tradition of the districts in the municipality of Garachico includes the celebration in honor of the Virgen de Candelaria in Genovés. Dates and programs may vary. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, check the exact dates before making arrangements.
Stage II of the Camino Real del Norte also passes through Genovés. If you include this stage in your hiking plans, check the specific route and trail conditions in advance using up-to-date information. Festival planning and choosing a route are two different ways to shape your stay around a particular theme: one around a specific date, the other around the course of the stage.
