Founded in 1505, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles is considered the third-oldest church building on the island of Tenerife. Together with local festival traditions, a visitor center about honey and bees, and trails through the protected coastal landscape, El Sauzal offers different highlights for those interested in culture and nature. When choosing a destination, you can consider whether history, festival dates, honey and wine experiences, or scenery matter most to you.
Culture and Local Traditions
The Museo de la Lucha Canaria is a free interpretation center dedicated to the history of Canarian wrestling. The traditions also differ in age: the Bajada del Arco y la Cucaña dates back to the early 19th century, while the Auto de Reyes tradition began around 1934 at the church of San Pedro Apóstol. During the Bajada del Arco, young men compete for fruit, vegetables, and bread decorating a wooden arch attached to a pole; the specific arrangements may vary.
The Bendición de los Panes de San Nicolás takes place every year on September 10; the program may vary. The Bajada Nocturna de la Virgen also takes place annually, in June: it leads from San Pedro to the associated Ermita, with torchlight illuminating the route. Dates and arrangements may vary. If you would like to include a festival in your stay, check the current program in advance.
Insights into Honey and Wine
The Casa de la Miel has a free visitor center. There, you can learn more about beekeeping, honey processing, bees and wax, as well as the “Miel de Tenerife” designation. La Casa del Vino offers wine-tasting courses; check the current program before making specific plans. The two experiences have different focuses: the visitor center provides information about bees and honey, while the courses at La Casa del Vino focus on wine tasting.
Sea Views and Scenic Trails
The Mirador de Las Breñas offers sea views and a panorama of northern Tenerife. The Sendero de Las Breñas begins there, descending to the protected Costa Sauzalera. The Sendero de La Ladera has a different focus: it passes through a natural area with plants native to the region, reaches the Barranco de las Mejías, and passes several points of historical and artistic interest. The trails differ in focus: Las Breñas descends to the protected coast, while La Ladera combines native plants with points of historical and artistic interest.
The only known population of Lotus maculatus is currently located at Punta de El Puertito in the municipality of El Sauzal. It lies within the protected landscape area of Paisaje Protegido de Costa de Acentejo T-36; the species is protected and endangered. This plant species makes the conservation aspect tangible, alongside the scenic views. Cueva de los Viejos cannot currently be visited because it is privately owned. Check access locally before planning a visit.
