In Buenavista Del Norte, the coast, trails and traditions offer different ways to shape your stay. Almost the entire coastline can be explored on foot, while most of the extensive network of trails runs through the Parque Rural de Teno. There are also specific cultural sites, traditional crafts and recurring festivals. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first consider whether you want to focus on coastal scenery, hiking or a particular event.
Coastal Scenery and Trails
At Playa de Las Arenas, a lava rock platform stretches along the coast, formed by lava from the El Palmar volcano. The De Buenavista a la playa de Las Arenas trail is 2.7 kilometres long; a round trip takes about two hours. Shells from various mollusc species, corals from a depth of 50 metres and lizard skeletons have also been found at the beach.
El Rayo is a geological coastal formation at Punta de La Laja, near the Faro de Buenavista. From the lighthouse, it can be reached on foot along the coast. Layers of lava flows, separated by scoria, can be seen in the formation. The Salinas de la Tablada offer a different insight into local geology: they were used as natural salt pans in summer, when the water evaporated and the salt crystallised.
Trails run on both sides of the Punta de Teno headland, where there are also coves for swimming. The coast also features natural pools formed between lava flows. The sea and conditions in the pools can change with the weather and swell. Access to Punta de Teno via the TF-445 is regulated because the area is particularly sensitive. Access by private vehicle, on foot or by bicycle is completely prohibited on all days of the week. Bus route 369 connects the bus station in Buenavista Del Norte with Punta de Teno; check the latest information before travelling. Kayak trips and boat excursions are available with advance reservations, although operators and availability may change.
Monte del Agua is one of the best-preserved laurel forest areas in the world. Together with the network of trails, which runs mainly through the Parque Rural de Teno, it offers a different focus from the coast. You can therefore choose your stay according to which of these landscapes you would like to explore.
Culture, Festivals and Crafts
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios is in the historic centre on Calle La Alhóndiga, opposite Plaza de Los Remedios. The restored church is open to the public; as access may change, check before your visit. Traditional basket weaving in Buenavista Del Norte uses wicker, reeds, straw, palm leaves and rushes. These materials are used to make balayos and harneros for agricultural work.
In El Palmar, the Baile de Las Libreas is accompanied by flutes and drums playing the Tajaraste. The event concludes with a fire ritual in which the torches held by the devil figures are lit. In Teno Alto, the Baile de Piñata is celebrated during Carnival. Livestock farming and artisanal cheesemaking are also important economic activities there.
The agricultural festivals also have distinct features: at the DĂa de la Siembra de la Papa in Las Portelas, residents and visitors come together in summer for a planting day followed by a traditional lunch. The annual programme may vary. The DĂa de la Trilla takes place on the last Sunday in September in El Palmar. It demonstrates how animals help separate wheat from chaff; check this year's event dates before travelling.
The celebration in honour of San Antonio Abad takes place on the fourth Sunday in January. The programme includes a livestock fair, a traditional RomerĂa and the dance of the Romeros and Romeras; the exact schedule may vary. These dates can be an important factor in your plans if you want to time your stay to coincide with a particular festival.
