The rural Caserío de Taucho has been protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of a historic ensemble since 2005. Its building history is reflected in traditional construction materials, individual architectural details and adaptation to rocky terrain. The surrounding area of Boca del Paso is also worth exploring for its landscape and history of paths.

A protected caserío and its architecture

Basalt and volcanic tuff predominate in Taucho’s traditional buildings. Stone with mortar, wood, lime and roof tiles are also used. The construction methods therefore cannot be reduced to a single building material: certain materials predominate, while others complement the range.

The terrain also shapes the caserío. The buildings make use of rocky areas, leaving space for agriculture. The settlement pattern thus tells the story not only of individual houses, but also of how buildings and agricultural land fit alongside each other. Traditional Canarian architecture shapes the appearance of the hamlets of Tijoco, Taucho and Ifonche in upper Adeje.

One specific architectural detail can be found along the path from El Moñigal: a two-storey residential house with an access staircase to the granary. The staircase ends at a balcony with flat balusters. This example shows a described sequence of architectural elements—a residence, access to the granary and a balcony—so the focus is not just on the façade, but also on how the elements are arranged.

Chapel and washhouse

Taucho is home to the Ermita de la Virgen de Coromoto, a hermitage dedicated to the Virgen de Coromoto. The simple chapel is rectangular, with a gabled roof and a bell tower with a clock. Its layout, roof shape and clock tower provide clear architectural points of reference.

The Lavadero de Taucho is in the area known as El Pedregal, at the beginning of Calle La Capellanía. It has nine individual basins made of stone and mortar. Historically, the lavadero was used for washing clothes and also served as an important social meeting place.

The history of paths and the landscape around Boca del Paso

The Camino de la Boca del Paso connected the town centre of Adeje with La Quinta and Taucho. As part of the historic Camino Real, it led pedestrians towards Las Cañadas. This connection places the path within a longer history of footpaths. If you are planning a hike in the area, check trail conditions before setting out.

Boca del Paso is a narrow mountain pass; its name comes from the narrow passage used by pack animals. The surrounding area offers wide views of the coastal areas of Adeje and Arona, as well as the entire Barranco del Infierno Special Nature Reserve. These views belong to the area around Boca del Paso, not to the caserío as a whole.

A walk through the streets of Taucho is one activity available to visitors. Alongside the history of a longer historic route, exploring the village itself is another option.

Festivals and practical information

Taucho’s festivals are celebrated in June in honour of the Virgen de Coromoto. If you would like to plan your trip around the festivities, it is advisable to check the dates for the relevant year. One specific example from the events programme is the 15th Taucho Ethnographic Days, held in June 2026. The programme brought together tradition, cultural heritage and community participation. On 20 June 2026 at 11 a.m., the guided route “La memoria del Agua” took place as part of the event, with customs and traditions brought to life through performances.

For public transport information, the circular TITSA route 449 runs through Taucho and, among other places, Adeje, Tijoco Alto and Tijoco Bajo. Check the current timetable for your travel date, as schedules and routes may change.
