In Tijoco Bajo, local history, cheesemaking and trails come together with views of the Barranco de Erques landscape. El Granero tells the story of several former uses; the Era de la Pedrera reveals a different side of the town. There are also the Fiestas de Tijoco Bajo, a cooking class centred on Almogrote, and tours of the farm and cheese dairy. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Tijoco Bajo, these highlights can help you decide which experiences you want to shape your stay.
Local History and Views
El Granero is a historic building dating from the 18th century. It was formerly used as a grain store, grocery shop, stable and dance hall. Adeje Town Council acquired and restored the building. The sequence of its uses—storage, retail, animal keeping and dancing—brings together different aspects of its history in one building.
The abandoned Era de la Pedrera is in the town centre, beside an old dry-stone structure. Its stone paving is largely well preserved, although there are traces of cement in some places; the threshing floor has a diameter of 14 metres. From there, the view stretches across Tijoco Bajo, the coast and the summit area. Here, the dimensions and condition of the stone surface sit alongside the expansive landscape view.
The church and the new square in Tijoco Bajo were inaugurated on 29 June 2016. This date provides a clear point of comparison with El Granero, a building dating from the 18th century: the two facts point to different periods in the town’s history.
Festivals and Culinary Experiences
The Fiestas de Tijoco Bajo date back to 1965 and take place on the first weekend of July in honour of the Virgen del Carmen and San Antonio Abad. If you want to plan your trip around the fiestas, check that year’s programme before setting off.
At La Cocina de Montesdeoca, a hands-on cooking class focuses on preparing Almogrote. It includes a glass of wine from Tenerife and a cheese platter featuring the dairy’s own cheeses. Places on the class are subject to booking; check current booking options as you plan.
QueserĂa Montesdeoca offers one-hour tours of a working farm and artisan cheese dairy in Tijoco Bajo. The tours include a cheese tasting and a tasting of wine from the south of Tenerife. The cooking class and the tour offer different experiences: one focuses on preparing Almogrote, while the other covers the farm and cheese dairy, as well as the tastings. Booking and access arrangements may change; check current availability and access details before your visit.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes
There are two different routes to consider when choosing a walk. One hiking route starts on Calle El Granero in Tijoco Bajo and follows the Camino Real towards the Barranco de Erques. A circular walk from Tijoco Bajo takes the Camino de Chacoroche and returns via the Camino Real. You can therefore choose between a route towards the ravine and a circular walk with a different outward route. If you plan to hike, check conditions and access in advance.
